Yes. I'm not a fan of flash photography as I feel that it brightens the subject and blacks out everything else.

Please do try some party shots and share your photos. Let's not jump into conclusion too early.

Please increase your budget a little and get the Fujifilm AV100. It is a lot better.

Thats great news Vivek. I cant wait to see how it stacks-up to the Panny FZ-35 since I was planning to buy the Panny before the HS10 was announced.

Please keep us posted on your initial impression and then full review with lot of samples

Oh is that so. Thanks for the suggestion. it is 12 mp and with some other features too.

Since I am not much experienced in the field of digicams, can you please suggest if there is any other good brand or model costing around 6000 or so. My main use will be shooting marriage functions where you have to click photos with flash after just a small delay of say less than 2 or 3 seconds if possible. Thanks for the help.

Zenster; you have got a good signature

Hey Folks,

Suggest me a good camera within a budget of 550USD.
Many of my friends suggesting me against buying anything other than Nikon/Canon/Sony in that order.

I was pretty impressed with the features that the Fuji HS10 provided, but again the same speculation of to go for Fuji or no as they do not use the Carl/Nikkor lenses (speculated to be the best)

I am right now looking to buy Nikon D3000, Suggest ASAP

para_7k, I did check with some vendors here. They say the av100 is an old model which was replaced by a170, and that it is not available anymore.

cyclops; Fuji J250 is shown in their site as a discontinued model. I think A170 has more features at the same 10 MP. I do not know about the picture quality though.

EDIT: Choosing a camera is more tricky than choosing a wife

What is your budget ? Fuji's J series aren't their best.

Fuji HS10 is actually very good. Don't worry about the Lens quality. Fuji's can produce some real good photos.

From my experience, photos from Fujis require some sharpening. As you said, Carl Zeiss produce real sharp photos.

Alternatively, take a look at Canon SX20IS, Sony HX1

Do you mean to say that AV100 is not available anymore ?

Why don't you try ordering online. It is a good camera for this price.

Fujifilm FinePix AV100 12 MP, 3x Optical Zoom - 2 Years Manufacturer Warranty

Fujinon lens is not inferior either.

and D3000 is SLR. If you are ready to live with an SLR, you should not even be looking at HS10.

true. but it's BSI sensor. can not be as good as Fuji's super CCD/EXR.

I don't have experience with Fuji. But I am buying HS10 for it's features, not for image quality. it will be most probably be worse than FZ35. I am pretty sure there are professionals who will post their reviews before mine, but I will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding operation etc.

received it. first impressions are good. haven't had time to play with it since preparing for my class on the weekend. some issues though.

1. manual zoom is a little too tight to smoothly zoom in during a video.
2. controls are complicated. need some time to learn. to change movie mode one has to navigate thru the menus.
3. in evening somewhere i screwed up IS settings. coudln't get a a decent portrait of my constantly moving son. again refer to point 2.

forum won't let me post larger than 1 MB so i am resizing and posting. I can send you original if you need. most of the pics show heavy noise reduction. but what it looses in sensor, it more than makes up with it's zoom.

examples of zoom.
