Sony is best bet..Even i am planning to get Sony over Fuji HS20EXR ( found it to be bit tricky to handle) & FZ100( although a good cam, but availability issues and price).

The Sony's Image stabilization is unbelieveable, giving exceptionally sharp pictures even while using Digital Zoom, let alone Optical. The video is even better than their own Handycam & it has GPS, 50fps Video, Sweep Panorama, DSLR rivalling shutter speeds, 400+battery backup (as compared to around 200 shots in others), 3 years warranty, the list is endless.

Do clarify if you have any further doubts.
Thanks Vipin. I have been researching over the last couple of days and finally have brought it down to Canon SX30IS and Sony HX100V. There are many reviews available all over the net for Canon and they rate it highly. While there are very few reviews available for the Sony model but the user comments have been good. That's left me a little confused.

Sony is available for 19.7k on letsbuy. While Canon is around 24k. That makes Sony all the more VFM. I am more inclined towards it now.

How is Canon elph 300HS / Ixus 220 HS ? My cousin is looking for an ultra compact cam for < 10k and has zeroed in on this model.

I just bought a Canon A1200 based on some fairly good reviews that I read.
Take a look here:

Canon PowerShot A1200 Review at CNET

Cost me INR 5800
It's got an optical viewfinder, and can shoot HD: features which many models don't have at this price range.

Slim digicam for the pocket

Hi, I need an inexpensive slim camera that i can carry at all times (like a mobile cam) in my jeans/trouser pocket. Price range 5-10k. Photo quality - above average will do. Primarily, it should be as compact and light as possible.

Your best camera is the one you always carry with you!

I have a Canon SX130 for trips etc. Just want another one for everyday use - for impromptu street shots etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have a look at Canon IXUS 105. Worth buying is you are looking for a basic camera. Slim & Sleek, perfect fit for jeans.

Hi Mr. Boss! I would like to correct you here. The battery shot capacities mentioned are as per CIPA standards(Camera & Imaging Products Association) and since the testing conditions are the same for all (50% with flash & 50 % without flash), the battery shot capacities can easily be compared. As per CIPA standards, the capacity for Nikon P500 is 220 shots & Sony HX100v is 410 shots. So all in all, with similar conditions, the Sony would give 100% more shots than the Nikon.

Hey! Though the Canon SX30 is a good camera, the lack of the following makes is obsolete:
  • CCD Sensor vs CMOS Sensor (Canon vs Sony)
  • HD vs Full HD Video (Canon vs Sony)
  • No Photo clicking during video like in HX100v
  • No Panorama shots
  • No 3D Photos
  • No Ring style zoom/focus
  • No GPS Geotagging
  • Battery shot as per CIPA standards
  • ISO 1600 (3200 in Sony)
  • 2.7" 230000 pixel LCD (3" 921000 pixel in Sony)
  • Shutter speed - Minimum/Maximum 15 & 1/3200 seconds (30 & 1/4000 seconds in Sony)

Thanks vipin. That makes HX100V a better buy, moreover its lighter on the pocket as well @20k . Will surely go ahead with my purchase.

You're most welcome! As for your cousin who zeroed in on the IXUS 220 HS, the product is really good in low light conditions and records videos in Full HD. The only competitor to the Canon is a Sony again (trust me i'm not a Sony employee) with their WX7 which is in the range of 12K. This model has almost exactly the same features and quality as the HX100v, barring the 30x zoom. As compared to the Canon, the video sharpness and autofocus speeds are much much faster and the rest of the features are as mentioned in the earlier HX100v post.

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

My wife is looking for a compact purse camera.

1. 4x zoom from 24mm-100mm (the S95 and SD 4000 are 28mm)
2. good low light performance (ideally f2.8-4.5 but Elph 500 is a full stop slower)
3. slim (S95 and P300 are not as slim as the SD 4000 and Elph 500)
4. good ergonomics (this is where the Elph 500 is poor with it's touch screen only controls).

Short-listed are the Nikon P300, Canon S95, Canon Elph 500 (Ixus 310), Canon SD 4000IS (Ixus 300).

Cons:
S95/P300 - too thick
S95/SD 4000 - not wide enough
Elph 500 - touchscreen compromises ergonomics and slowest lens of the lot

Pros:
S95 - Erogonomics and sensor size (only 28mm)
SD 4000 - slim and Ergonomic (only 28mm)
Elph 500 (IXUS 310) - wide
P300 - wide like the Elph 500 but with better ergonomics and faster lens

any opinions and alternates? A friend suggested the Sony WX10 with the qualification that while it has a slightly slower lens (wide) it goes a lot longer and is still slim enough to fit in a small purse. The S90/P300 are a very tight fit so I would be looking at something that is less than 25m (1") thick.

Hey! The kind of models you have talked about here are primarily with fast lenses and compact in size. I think you should go for the Olympus XZ1 with your eyes closed. It has a fast lens (f/1.8-2.5) and is priced very well, though it is bigger than the rest. Since there is a hot shoe provision, it also supports all Pen accessories like the EVF & Flash. I love the Art Filter effects in the same.

Thanks but my wife saw my S90 and found it too big so it will have to be a camera that is thinner than the S90.

95% of my wife's photos are shot indoors in what ever light is available.

The P300 was what I was considering at first since it's lens is 1.8-4.9 but is about as thick as the S90.

My wife will never use an external flash or RAW. Her photos are so she can upload them to facebook, maybe make 5x7 prints of (very few), and view on our LCD TV.

What about the Samsung WB2000? Most the the compact cameras I am seeing have a f/5.9 at the long end. Even the Elph 500 is f/5.9 at the long end although it starts out f/2.0 at the wide end.

I dont mind sacrificing a little at teh wide end (say 28mm) if the lens can be f/2.0-4.5 instead. I think the SD 4000 might be her best bet. what does the elph 500 have the SD 4000 does not (other than the wide end)? Am I missing something?

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Does anybody here own Sony DSC HX9V or Canon SX230HS ? I am evaluating these two for a travel-zoom camera. Not interested in other bulky models. Both are priced similarly at about 16k on JJM and about $300 in US. Are there any other better online/B&M stores in Bangalore where I can try these out ?
