Hi Zenster,

Today, I enquired about the Panasonic FZ35 at Panasonic Brand Shop in Kormangala, they quoted me 29,900 + Tax.

Now, I feel i got the best deal from USA!!!

Zenster, If you have friends in USA, buy the cam from US as u will get the best deal this week.

Today, I had been to Cosmos Mall for shopping. I bought Transend 8GB Class 6 Card for 650/-

:

Are you moving from point and shoot for:

1) Better lowlight performance
2) Better manual controls
3) Better zoom and wide

I was moving from from my f11 pns for better zoom and wide. This was a good review:
ZS3(TZ7) vs Canon S90....S90 goes back to the store...: Panasonic Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

I bought a tz7/zs3.

well i have a bias towards canon and also i want good low light photographs, basically indoor shots. Also i want an ultra compact camera. I have checked out sony but they come with touch screen for which i am not to comfortable. I will definitely check out the panasonic model. Thanks.

The low light specialist, high quality digicams are:

1)Canon s90
2)Panasonic lx3
3)Fuji s200exr

The Canon seems to be the one for you. Just check out the auto mode performance described in the discussion, as it will be important for existing PnS owners.

Barrel Distortion, happens if you snap in RAW and process them on non-canon s/w. PTlens would do the job fixing it though and the pop-up flash isn't great. Otherwise, a pretty neat pocket cam though, has everything one'd want.

A big -ve point, for my needs, in case of the Canon is that it's quite a bit heavier than the Panny. Defeats the portability requirement somewhat. Also at Amazon, the Canon is $35 dearer.

The AA compatibility is a big plus.
Is there really such a huge difference between their weights/bulks ?

The Canon's ability to take AA batteries and flip out screen has me sold on it.

Btw, what's CHDK?
I have 75% decided on Canon, unless FZ35 offers something decidedly better (pic quality?).

I was in the same boat when I was about to buy a new camera from US last month. My friend came early so I could not buy from US. Finally after lot of consideration I went ahead with "Olympus SP 590UZ". Based on many reviews, it was a best fit for my budget of 20-22 in India.

FZ 35 has better pic quality than SX20 according to many online reviews (Cameralabs, photographyblog etc), SX20 suffers low light image quality as well. Based on my research I would say go ahead with FZ35.

PS: I am satisfied with the performance my Olympus is offering. It has 26x optical zoom (26-676 mm) but at the full zoom you should have tripod or something to rest your hand on while clicking pics. You can also have a look at the Olympus 590UZ.

Canon PowerShot SX20 IS Review - Specifications | PhotographyBLOG

SX 20 - 560g

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 Review - Specifications | PhotographyBLOG

FZ-38/35 - 367g. That's around 35% less weight. Quite a bit when portability is under consideration.

Both weights without batteries.

Actually dpreview performed a group test of super zooms, and FZ28 and the SX10 came out pretty close contenders.
Both of them were joint winners

Good News for FZ35 Fans and Potential Buyers!!

FZ35 now available in India for around 19k-22k on ebay with dealer warranty and 14 days money-back for manufacturing defects. I have personally bought my old Canon digicam from one of these dealers call JK_Camerazone in chennai. He is reliable as far as I can tell, but our friends in Chennai and help us here.

Guess its better than getting no warranty on imported pieces..

FZ35, Digital Cameras, fz28 items at low prices on eBay India

This time around though, most online reviews seem to suggest that the SX20 is hammered by the FZ35.
I really did want the canon, and was about to order an accessory bundle package from Amazon today, but now I am unsure of what to do.

Video quality of both seems to suggest they are pretty evenly matched in HD (720p).

Usually the FZ series by panasonic have been the best compared to the competition for years now. I had the FZ5 for a few months and it was way better in image quality than my friend's Canon S1 or may be it was the S2IS. I have also seen too many Canon superzooms go kaput due to lens error a month or 2 after the warranty. I have been a bit wary of the Canon superzooms since then.
