Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Did anybody get a chance to lay hands on the new Oly XZ-1 ? Looks like it is been rated as one of the best prosumer cameras. Competition seems to be Canon S95 and Lumix LX5.

The Oly XZ1 is closer to the G12/LX5/PEN PL2 in size than the S90/95.

Yes Chottu, CC and the shop that supplied the bazooka size lenses that BolBolero brought to Kaas and several other shops. Infact BolBolero was with me that entire day but no luck.

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

hi all, i was planning to buy a descent P & S camera for taking pictures; i don't have much technical now how about cameras. One associate suggested to go for an DSLR.

My requirements are;

Budget; 20-25k (can extend this for something exclusive)

Relatively easy to use; Not many settings

Excellent picture quality

Preferably not too bulky

Decent feature set; image stabilization, face detection etc.

Usage will be for outings/scenery and Automobiles.

The basic idea is that i don't want to change lenses for shots and all.

Any help on the above will be appreciated.

You can't go wrong with a Panasonic. I would suggest you to check - Panasonic FZ100 - Panasonic premieres Lumix DMC-FZ100 high-speed superzoom camera: Digital Photography Review

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

If you want compact, try Canon SX 210IS.

Thanks for the quick reply buddy, looks very promising. It has the lens and all but overall seems like a good package. To be truthful i am a bit paranoid towards the panasonic brand, nevertheless it is shortlisted!

It feels like it is very basic and from the review i went through, the image quality is not very promising.

Thanks for your input!

Guys, My purchase window is 2 weeks so let the suggestions continue.

S95 may be small in size but is often compared with LX5 and other high end p&s cameras in terms of picture quality and features. See the link below.

XZ-1 also falls in the same category. See the review below.

Please have a look at Panasonic TZ20 or Canon SX230 HS both are P&S and has got the same spec. No lense change as well.

I have used the LX3 (not LX5) and S90 head to head and out of the box the S90 procduces nicer images. The LX3 can produce nice images too but you have to change the default settings. Besides the S90/95 can slip in to Levis pocket. The LX3/LX5/XZ1 etc.. wont unless you are wearing really baggy pants.

Re: The Digital Camera Thread: Questions, discussions, etc.

Go by price, size and colors (= color balance, some will give more vivid greens, some more vivid blues etc).
Frankly most of the cams in similar price range offer similar features and picture quality.

And if they are not compact sized - you may as well spend money on DSLRs or EVIL cams.

I had started a discussion in the DSLR thread but on the advice i got from there it seems that i should stick to the PS camera, That said i have recieved two votes from the Bhpians regarding the Panasonic Fz series.

I too have suggested the S90/S95 in the other thread. Till date I have never come across any pocket size compact camera better than the S90/S95.

In the P&S range, the good (prosumer) ones as per reviews etc. are:
Canon s90 or s95 (most compact size)
Panasonic LX3 or LX5
Olympus XZ1 (seems to have a killer lens, but slightly bulkier than the above 2. It has also been rated the highest by dppreview)
Canon G12 (bulkier than all above, but again rated the highest, at par with Olympus XZ1)

I have a G11 and the IQ is very very good, but if had to buy one today, I would seriously check out the Oly XZ1.

If you need more zoom, consider the Panasonic TZ series or the equivalent Canaon series (upto 16x zoom). These cameras are quite compact inspite of a long zoom range.

If even more zoom is needed (25x to 35x type), consider the Panasonic FZ series or the equivalent Canon ones. Mind you that these are reasonably bulky, quite close to a compact dSLR size and certainly not pocketable unless you have very large pocket.

Pls keep in mind that as the zoom ratio increases, you will be compromising in the IQ to an extent (low light as well as high ISO), since the longer zoom P&S cameras utilize a smaller sensor size. A longer zoom is also an optical compromise.

In the end, I would suggest that you prioritize your requirements first -
- what zoom range is a must,
- how high is the image quality you need,
- low light and high ISO capability,
- how important is the size, etc.
Then choose a model that fits your needs the best (i.e. compromises your needs the least)
