My wife is still looking.

1. Must be thinner than 20mm so it can go in her purse where her Nokia N96 used to go.

2. Must be capable of low light photography

3. no touch screen.

How is the Sony WX9 compared to the Canon Ixus310?

All compacts I find are pretty slow at the long end. Are there any compact cameras (under 1" thick) that have lenses that are a bit faster at the long end say f/4.5 at 100mm? The Canon ixus 310 is f/5.9 at it's long end so is the Samsung TL350 and Panasonic FX90, the Sony WX9 is f/6.3 but it is thinner.

Is there nothing that is say 28-100, f2.8-4.5, and under 21mm? The closest seems to be the SD4000 with a f/5.3 at the long end but with a thickness of 23mm (dpreview spec) it will be a tight fit.

Ya ya I know but the Leica Dlux is way too expensive.

My requirements are simple :-

1. Min 5X optical zoom
2. Good Battery Life
3. Best quality pics
4. IS/VR is mandatory

Budget is less than 10K

Anyone knows good model #'s in this price range? I am more keen on a Canon or Panasonic.
I am looking for the exact same thing, except
Not sure about the IS/VR thing
And, I found some good ones in the mall visit yesterday.

Sony Cybershot- W520 14 MP- good overall- 6800 INR
Canon Powershot A3200- again 14MP- okish ( doesnt have a self-timer! according to comparison on flipkart- 6785
Canon A1200 - 12MP is a good buy at 5815 INR
Sony Cybershot DSC-W520 vs Sony Cybershot DSC-W510 vs Canon PowerShot A 3200 vs Canon PowerShot A 1200: Compare Cameras: Flipkart.com
Anybody has any pick here?

Would be buying this thursday

thanks,

Ace.

Take a look here:

Canon PowerShot A1200 Review at CNET

Cost me INR 5800
It's got an optical viewfinder, and can shoot HD: features which many models don't have at this price range.

Latheesh, LX5 is my first digital camera. I saw online prices in the range of Rs. 27500 (flipkart) to Rs. 29000 (jjmehta). I am very happy with the camera. You can see sample photos in my travelogues and if you want to look at the full resolution pictures of any of those pictures, I can email them to you. All the images in the travelogues are jpegs from the camera with a little bit of processing in gimp. I have not posted any processed .RAW images so far in the travelogues.

What I like
  • Solidly built camera (metal body)
  • 24 mm wide angle coverage
  • Gives full manual control
  • Compact size
  • Great images
  • Aspect Ratio switch
  • A programmable function button (wish there was at least one more)
What I miss/do not like
  • Aperture value limited to f/8 on the upper end. So you cannot get smooth flowing water photos in bright light.
  • Tele end is limited to 90mm (we cannot have it all)
  • Uses info-lithium batteries that are specifically designed for this camera. So you cannot buy batteries from any shop if you run out of power.
You can read a comparison review at dpreview. If you can get this from Singapore (with International warranty), I think it will be a lot cheaper. I think the S95 is also a great camera, though I have not used it. I wanted the wider angle coverage and hence LX5 was the only choice then.

My camera now looks like this after buying a few accessories. I have also bought two additional batteries.

Thanks Biju!

My budget is 20K max. I checked S95, somehow I did not like it. Most proabably I'll go for LX5, it retail for ~ $400 in US of A. I am not in a hurry (+ Vit M issue), will ask one of my friends to get it. Please let me know the accessory details.

Just something you ought to know. The S95 has been replaced by the S100 and hence the S95 might be on sale in some places. This might make it a very good buy.

Flipkart and JJMehta will have more info on price.
But the camera deserves this price.
Unprocessed straight from the camera images:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...ash-color.html

Only problem is the horrible manual with which it comes. Poor Japanese to English translation to be blamed.
The post processing software is SilkyPix. Getting manuals on it will be equally tough.

LX5 biggest advantage is a a little more of optical zoom.
If you are not too much hung on that then try to get LX3. Might be possible that you can get it cheaper.

And to add to you confusion :
Do try Olympus XZ-1
Comes with a mouth watering f1.8. In a pocket sized camera!! How sweet is that? That ever elusive Bokeh is now a possibility.
Olympus XZ-1 Review

In fact if you have a budget of 28k then Panasonic GF-1 and Olympus EP series cameras also will be in range. Do have a look at them too. They have flexibility of interchangeable lens with a small compact camera body.

Are you a professional photographer?
Coz this LX5 is seriously all decked up. Never thought I will see a LX5 with all accessories in India. Where you got this camera?
Hope we meet sometime.

I saw it listed at Amazon at $370. So check the prices in Singapore as well. If you buy it from the US, you will not get a warranty that will be honoured here. I actually bought mine from Singapore through a friend. I had paid close to Rs. 26000 then. But it was close to the time when it was just launched. So it must be a lot cheaper now.

Navin, this is news to me. Actually after I bought the LX5, I stopped looking at other models. I did not want to tempt myself.

I am someone who loves photography. No more professional than that. The camera was a gift to my wife last year. But I have been using it ever since. Incidently after I bought this camera, the first trip we made was to Hampi.

I have bought the following accesories:
  • DMW-LA6 lens adaptor
  • Two additional DMW BCJ13 batteries
  • Bower 52mm snap on lens cap
  • Hoya 62mm ND8 filter
  • A used Hoya 52-62mm step-up ring
I found that often smear marks appeared on the lens and I had to clean the lens often. The lens adaptor and a 52mm UV filter along with the bower lens cap takes care of this. Also I occasionally take photographs of food items. The steam fogs up the lens if I go for close-up shots of hot food items. So that issue too is taken care of now.

I bought the additional batteries since that is required when you go on day long trips and especially if you shoot RAW+JPG.

Since I cannot use apertures greater than f/8, I bought the ND8 filter which will cut the light by 3 stops. Hope to use that soon, but I am not sure if that will be sufficient during the day time. It will be good enough in low light (to reduce the light further) and in the morning and evening. I bought it in size 62mm so that I can use it with more lenses along with the step-up ring. And I already have a CPL filter of 62mm. The above cost me $148 from B&H.

I am now planning to get a full sized flash. That should make it a complete kit that I can use for indoor events too, without cranking up the ISO speeds too much.

You were in US when you bought it or is it that B&H has started shipping to India?

I ordered it from here and got it delivered to a colleague in the US. Another colleague who was travelling back from the US brought the items to India.

Thanks the IXUS 220 looks really attractive in terms of overall package. As it comes with 24-120mm wide angle lens, 5X optical zoom and looks quite nice and slim too.

Its price is 10K on ebay so should be cheaper in stores.

I want to compare it with a Panasonic with exactly same specs and price and purchase it over the weekend.

Any feedback on this camera :-

http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-came...-34167832.html

12X optical zoom, HD recording etc. Reliance Digital offer price is 10,665 as mentioned in today's TOI

I am no camera expert, but when i was researching for a ps camera had found Ixus 220hs(Elph 300hs is US) better than sx130is. Not able to recall as to what led me think so.

Leica is the only camera I know whose value increases with time. Mind that.
So its not a depreciating asset as such.

That X-1 is going to be a very rare camera in coming days.
