Nice bright VF? Where do you find one below 1500$?
I will take live view any Day. I had to fry so many poppadoms to get the focus right for my star trails shots.
the only camera with a half decent VF I have seen is the Pentax *ist DS and +

For manual focusing live view is a bonus.
All you need to do is go into magnification and then focus to your hearts content.

Was just gifted a Nikon COOLPIX S50c camera which has WI-FI connectivity etc.

Dont know much about cameras and my previous camera was a Sony DSC - P100 5.1MP.

How is this camera compared to the earlier one and as a camera on its own. Also can I send images directly to my mobile E61i which also has Wi-Fi.

Right now with Rudra's advice I am thiking about the Canon 40D, 17-55/2.8, 70-300/4-5.6 IS (for my son's school events), and 28/1.8 (total about Rs. 1.5L). A Nikon D300 system (with similar Nikon lenses) would cost me Rs. 50K (33%) more besides I am getting a 420EX flash for free so that saves me another Rs. 15K or so (for a SB 600 or 430EX).

I wish Oly had a 14-40/2.8 and a 24/1.8. This would make the system so much more attractive, i believe the E3 will out-cool the D300 (Nikon).

Navin, I suggest you splurge on a 100-400 L IS lens. 1300$. Expensive, but this will be the only zoom you will ever need.
for wide angle, the 17-40L(canon) and 17-55 F2.8 from tamron are good bets.

If you are planning to freeze action IS will not help(school sports?)
You will need usable ISO-1600 + a very fast lens.

I think canon has a 70-200 L 2.8 lens which will be great to use with a 1.4x teleconverter in case 1300$ 100-400L IS is too much.

On PAAI people have quite a collection from both nikon and canon land.

Head over to there and you will find critically acclaimed bird shooters in both canon and nikon land.

most of the time I shoot from 24-80mm (SLR equiv hence I figured that is where my best lens should be hecne the 17-55). I know the 17-40 has L glass and the 17-55 does not but the gap between 40 and 70mm is huge. 55 and 70mm is manageable.

There are 6 reasons I did not want the 70-200/2.8 or 100-400/4.5-5.6L.
1. weight - when carring a camera on sports day you dont want to carry more than you need and dodge 70 other parents
2. colour - white lenses will make me stick out like a sore thumb
3. cost - Rs. 75K-95K for a lens that I will use 2-3 times a year
4. weight (part 2) - a 70-300 lens is something I can carry on vacation but a 70-200/2.8 or 100-400/4.5-5.6 are 1.5kg each! I'll most probably leave them at home. The 70-300/4-5.6 IS is 700 gms.
5. the 100-400 has L glass and 100mm more reach but is that worth 35K?
6. my niece - she has a 70-200/2.8 and a 1.4x which I might borrow if I feel the need (school play/theater).

and as for a nikon vs canon debate; it is pointless. I chose canon over nikon becuase either the 40D or D300 is too much camera for me (why the D80/ are about all the camera I will ever need but I took the 40D as the 3" LCD will be easier on my old eyes).

I chose the 40D over the D300 because I am savig 65K+ (50K on the body and lenses and 15K on the free flash).

What does the D300 have that the 40D does not
1. HDMI - serious. you gonna connect your camera to your LCD TV via HDMI?
2. 51 point autofocus - wow!
3. 922,000 pixel screen - something i could use with my old eyes
4. 12/14 bit burst choice so you can get smaller files sieze or greater burst speed. cool.
5. 100% view finder (D40 is 95%) - also cool.
6. 12 mega vs 10 mega - I dont need anything over 4 Mega. I really wish thes cameras allowed you to use 4 Mega and reduce noise as a result.
7. 6400 ISO. given the noise I wont shoot beyond 800. I thought; given that you recommend 1600 with the simple zoom I've chosen I am now a bit confused.
8. SRS, Active D, picture control : all very nice but really i wonder if I really will need them.
9. if I buy Nikon I can sing Paul Simon's song "Kodachroms"! :-)

both have live view (in both cases it heats up the sensor), both have dust reduction, both have 3" LCDs. One costs $500 less.

Oh no, that's not true. The 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 is a fantastic lens, that's my standard zoom. Soon it will be replaced by 12-60mm SWD when E-3 will release.

Remember the interior shots from my office, all from 14-54mm, check those snaps again. The following is shot in jpg mode using 14-54mm and no PP has been done, this was shot before I turned to RAW and PP. Judge for yourself.

actually given that the Oly has a smaller sensor the Sigma 24/1.8 is about the same as the Sigma 30mm/1.4 on the Nikon or Canon. Only the 30/1.4 is faster and has a bigger rep than the 24/1.8.

I'd still prefer a 14-40/2.8 fixed apeture. Maybe I am old (I started on a Hassie 500 and a 80mm lens) but I feel varying thw apeture is kinda like cheating many of them hit minimum apeture very soon; for example i used to have a nikon 28-108/3.5-4.5 and by 50mm it was already a f/4.

On a telephoto though it really saves weight.

A friend of mine is coming from the US and I have asked him to get me a digicam. I searched and read quite a few reviews (dp, lumix, t-bhp etc etc ).
And I am confused as to which one to go for.

Both have image stablization ( I need it )
Both are crappy for higher ISO images ( reivews and sample images confirm that).

I am leaning towards FZ8 as its lighter, comes with Li-ion battery and is much cheaper (getting it for 220 USD as comapred to 343 USD for s5 and 281 for s3)

After reading much praise for H5 and H3 here I am in a dilemma now, dont mind spening extra money but it should be worth it
