It is released, but no live view.

But the previews suggest viewfinder is bright and actually usable unlike canon's.
I would prefer Pentaprism to liveview anyways.
Its more tempting than the E-3. If only they can come out with the kit for < 1200USD I might be very very tempted! At current price of 14-1500$ its over budget.

Well, E3 has bright viewfinder with pentaprism and liveview.

But we can only speculate about D300, E3 and A700. Only 40D has in-depth review on production model until now. The rest only have hands-on preview on pre-production models. The price of 40D is really cheap compared to the rest.

Ask the same question in Sony SLR talk forums and you will bring out problems with E-3 system.
A700 is the best cam in Sony SLR forum, E-3 is the best in Oly forum, 40D is the best in Canon forum.

That said the 40D review is really an eye opener. High ISO performance Canon is still king, I wonder what do they put in the sensors!

I have a query, even if i set the picture quality in my Nikon D40x as JPG Basic ( which is the lowest quality) and resolution as Large, i am getting over 1MB sometimes 2.5MB pictures. Do i tone down the resolution to get pictures to sizes that i can forward to friends and family via. email. If i tone down the resolution, then i will get a lower mega pixel images

Also, is there any compression software to reduce the already existing images that i have? I do know that jpeg is the lightest that you can get.

Well, I think you can download a plugin for Win Xp where you can right click on the image and just convert it into smaller pictures like 800 x 600. I would suggest shooting in the largest resolution and format and then later convert it to smaller versions on your PC to send it across to your friends and family. Also remember to resize and then do any PP (except for cropping) you like.

Shan2nu, give a serious look at Canon 40D, it has very good reviews, and great lenses to back you.

The Sony dSLR by itself may be good, but it is yet to develop as a family, limited lens choices, etc. At your price range don't look at dSLRs without live view, you should be looking at 40D, D300 & E3.

Shan, I'll go with Samurai's view. You can add Nikon to your choice list also.

Sony on the other hand is coming up fast. Their Alfa 700 with CZ lens looks good in paper. But it'll be difficult to carry on with their limited support (as of now).

Your budget is pretty good to start with.

Thanks a lot, will check them out. BTW, when using "live view", will the cam be able to project the exact brightness, contrast, colour etc that you see in the view finder? Which mode is generally used by professional photographers?

I take all snaps with the highest settings the cam can offer and then downsize them using photoshop.

My team-bhp avatar was 20MB when i created it on PS, but the one used here is just 19KB.

U might be able to find downsizng softwares on the internet. Just do a google search n see.

Just came back after buying the S5IS (Made in Japan) which jayesh suggested over the S3IS as the latter is being phased out and certain improved features of S5IS.

Total cost for S5IS + 2 GB SD card(with original warranty) + carry case = 18K

He gave 90 days replacement warranty and 5 years repair one on the camera.

He opens up only after 12:00 PM, best bet is to reach there by 12:30 PM, as I was there early and had to wait for him to openup.

S3IS was for about 13,700/- without 2GB SD card and case.

People not wanting to carry cash/part/short of cash can use the Canara Bank ATM next to the Police station(same building), only Rs. 22/- are charged extra per transaction, for other debit cards.

mugen_power your best bet would be the Nikkor 55-200mm VR,brilliant lens and good VFM. Think it sells at between 10-12k in India.

Your kit lens already covers 18-55mm,so ideally you need to look beyond 55mm.

Keep your kit lens for regular shoots as in indoor and family pics.
