nitroxx's 300 GB Playstation 3: DIY and pictures

Hi guys I've been pondering over what i should do about the internal memory..and after alot of technical support from a friend at Jumbo Sony in dubai i will buy the Western digital scorpio 320GB SATA 3GB/S 2.5 LP 5400RPM 8MB CACHE for 8500/- from alfa. And I have read the instruction manual of the Ps3 harddrive changing in the PS3 manual. My friends in Dubai have all upgraded to this drive and now its my time... I will post pictures of drive capacity after the install.

Remember the standard Ps3 drives are seagate momentus 5400rpm 8 mb cache 1.5g/s read time. for a video tutorial please go through youtube. it'll help with one screw driver and 5 screws thats it. Sony themselves teach you how in the manual.
So wish me luck guys!!! for the largest Ps3 around currently.
And Ps3 uses fat32 system so dont go using an ntfs drive, first format using swissknife v3 (google it)

I know a few people who have done similar upgrades. Very easy to do and the best thing is that it does not invalidate your warranty.

Nitroxx, can this upgrade be done to a Sony PS3 40 GB version as well? What is the actual difference between the 40, 60 and 80 GB versions of PS3 other than the drive size? I feel if there is no difference other than drive sizes then a 40GB PS3 + a 320 GB drive would work out much cheaper to run. Let me know so that I can make my purchase accordingly.

You can upgrade any of them with a bigger 2.5" SATA HDD. Stick to a 5400rpm drive as you see no benefit of a 7200rpm drive in a PS3 and it can get very hot.

Differences :

300 GB PS3 goes LIVE!!!!! DIY is here.

great...!!!! it worked and was the best moment of my gaming life..
HEres how... PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FAT32 file system external drive to back up your Ps3 data before you start.

A)start off by removing the Hdd cover with your finger nail
b)YOU will see a BLUE ANODIZED SCREW (LOL!! god gave me a sign)
c)unscrew this using a precision screwdriver, then there is a holder that you have to spring up and move the whole tray to the right.
d) after doing so remove the hard drive in the tray(SEAGATE/ps3)
e) unscrew the four screws holding the drive in the tray and slip the drive out.
f)replace the drive with the new drive(whatever you like) and align all the screws to the tray and drive again and screw them back on.
g)make sure the screws are torqued correctly.
h)slip the tray in, lock to the left as before.
i)put the blue screw back and close the spring holder.
j)close the hdd with the cover provided.

k)connect all wires to the Ps3 like you would and boot up.
l)the system will ask you to format (10 secs)
And voila it will reboot and you are done!. connect your fat32 external drive and restore the data.

the original Ps3 drive can be used with an external sata casing (700/-) as an external laptop drive.

USe swissknife software to format to fat32 and use that drive to back up data from laptops or your own Ps3 game saves through the USB port provided.cheers:

@cheap-deal: since games are getting more complex, they take up more space too now. For the Ps3 most games have to be installed onto the drive, like Gt5 for instance takes away 5 GB, so with a bigger drive, you wouldn't have to uninstall many games in the future plus have more space for saving replays and data. NOt to mention my music files and movies that I download from bittorrent.

@Ramie:yes my friend its motorized, helps in torquing correctly and opening up more stubborn screws as well..And I did huge Research before goin into this bro..Infact i've started getting calls from people who want the same thing done. i think, I'm gonna start charging when they really wanna lol!

Does buying a PS3 in the grey market require something called a "mod chip" to run certain pirated games? Or its always advisable to buy retail PS3 titles?

As far as I know as of now there is NO mod chip for the ps3 and all grey market stuff is the same as what is sold in the retail store but obviously without a warranty.
