Opera Mini browser app has been finally approved!!

Does not seem to load faster compared to Safari over 3G network. But should save on data charges and should be great in terms of speed, on GPRS/EDGE networks.

Apple is changing their licensing rules to control what software, they will allow on iPhone, iPad and its other devices.

What are the changes ?
  • App developers may only use Apple's programming tools.
  • Apple will refuse to distribute any apps in the iTunes store that violate the new agreement.
  • Developers may no longer use outside services to measure their application performance. Will make it easier to mask Apple's core inefficiencies. न रहेगा बाँस, न बजेगी बाँसुरी !!
Who is affected ?
  • Startups with huge VC funding, who're already working on projects with non-Apple tools.
  • Adobe Systems, which announced new tools for creating app versions for iPhone which automatically generate versions for other competing devices.
Why the hostile behavior?
Apple's core revenue streams have shifted from desktop computing to mobile.

In 2001, 80% of Apple's revenue came from its laptops and desktops.
That will drop to 27% in 2011. By end 2011, 50% of Apple's total revenue will come from iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.

Mobile devices with more applications
will naturally be more attractive to buyers.

In the battle for mobile telephony leadership, the struggle is on
to own developers and applications. Apple is thrashing tooth and nail, to try to grow their presence. They want to pressure developers to stick to Apple and dump Symbian, Blackberry, Android and others.

While I agree with your hypothesis, I am not too particularly concerned about Apple's new restrictions. I dont know about Adobe's tool, but the iPhone apps that come out of the tool suuuuuuck big time !! Basically, any app that is not designed or built with iPhone UI in mind will always suck.

Adobe is really p!ssed that Flash isn't supported natively in Safari (iPhone) and there is nothing they can do about it, short of creating their own brower app and hoping that Apple will approve it!

And this is what GSMArena.com has to say on the Iphone 4G:

iPhone 4G caught in the wild, is thicker than 3G and edgier - GSMArena.com news

Update: Actually, the truth about this iPhone 4G wannabe surfaced much much earlier than that. The device turned out to be a Japanese knock-off that some fraudsters were trying to sell to publications for 10 000 US dollars. We told you there was something wrong here.

It looks like the real thing but I hope it isn't the production version (prototypes are generally lower quality). The buttons and aluminium strip on the side looks very cheap along with the random joints. Apart from that looks like a good upgrade.

The new iPhone was conveniently lost in a Redwood city bar!! You bet its a prototype to mislead people.

If it isnt, one Steve Jobs is a raging maniac all red in face right now. And a guy getting fired!

This MicroSim thingie does seem unrealistic though. How many markets support them right now? and how many will when this phone gets launched in July?

It being "lost" is all a gimmick ! Apple knows best how to create the buzz around their products, it's all preplanned and NOTHING gets leaked just like that unless they want it to.
