Not sure though but is the plan thingy applicable to me since i bought the phone directly from Apple store US without any contract or plan. I paid around $ 620 (including taxes). @Jaggu if you know whom and how to approach in AT&T (if this is still applicable to me) it will be of great help

On an offside chance, once these phones land up in stores then call Apple US customer care.
They might be able to help. You could try it even now, I guess.

Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

I called Apple customer care long back and they informed that they will not be able to do anything to help me and whether AT&T can do the unlock for me i need to find out myself and apple will not be able to provide this information. A quick search in apple forums and communities states that AT&T will never unlock the phone for you at any cost. So only way is to wait and watch until iphone 4 unlocked version is launched officially in US and then hope that vendors like CUTYOURSIM may provide this service by paying some charges to them. As of now CUTYOURSIM is providing unlock service for phones locked in other countries like UK and europe. But they are not providing this service for phones locked to AT&T. Check the below link:

iPhone Remote Unlocking Service

CUTYOURSIM is genuine since many of my friends who stay in UK and Europe got their phone unlocked by paying $89 - $150 depending on the country they stay and the carrier to which their phones are locked

So that means you don't have to worry about the penalty part for pre-closing a contract. Info i have is from my ex colleague, he had gone to the local AT&T outlet and put a request when he was returning. He mentioned that he had produced the documents to show that he was doing an international travel (he did not mention the return to india part) for this. After this he synced his phone (2-3 days later) with iTunes and it gave the notification of unlock.

This is the info i have.

Moreover, the phone price is 'subsidized' by AT&T, and they are pretty strict about not unlocking it. So if someone sold their locked iPhone while in contract and ATT is no longer getting the money (from contract) then what is the motivation for ATT to ask Apple to unlock the phone. Quite honestly, I doubt Airtel getting involved in this - asking Apple to unlock the phone after paying off ATT.

If the delay in launching iPhone in India is any indication I doubt if Airtel or Aircel has enough 'clout' to even get Apple to 'think' about it.

Sigh. So does this mean I do not get iOS 5? I don't remember seeing such a message on my phone/iTunes when I first connected it. However, I paid 40 grand for the device, so it shouldn't be under contract. Jaggu says phones bought in Dubai are usually unlocked. I hope that is the case.

Will writing to Apple solve the problem? Will they be able to tell me if mine was factory unlocked?

Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

Planing to buy an iPhone 4 from Airtel on the new scheme of Rs 2000 rent and rs 1000 off. Spoke to guwahati representative today. Says he has stock available.

my questions are:

1. Its a gift to the wifey. She isnt oriented towards tech too much. So is iPhone better or should i buy her a 10-15K android?

2. how do i check that the phone given to me is the latest hardware launched?

3. I have a Sony 40 inch LCD and SonyHDR CX 150E, which connects seamlessly with my LCD. How will the iPhone fare ?

4. How would LG Optimus One do compared to the iPhone v/s an Android v/s a Sony Ericsson?

iPhone 4 is quite simple to use, and is powerful at the same time. It's more stable (Apple makes both the software and the hardware) than Android (known to be buggy at times), but Android is more customizable. Since she isn't too tech oriented, she might probably not use all of Android's features either. IMO go for an apple if the cost isn't a deterrent.

2. how do i check that the phone given to me is the latest hardware launched?

There has been only one launch of the iPhone 4. Whatever you buy (as long as it's an iPhone 4) will be the latest in hardware (Unless you get a 3GS by mistake. That is the only way you can get older hardware, and I am pretty sure you will not miss out on the big '4' on the box ). Hence no worries.

3. I have a Sony 40 inch LCD and SonyHDR CX 150E, which connects seamlessly with my LCD. How will the iPhone fare ?

You will have to get a separate accessory for that. Not very cheap. Being an Apple product, connectivity and ease of use are good. But the accessory itself is relatively expensive.

4. How would LG Optimus One do compared to the iPhone v/s an Android v/s a Sony Ericsson?

Don't have much of an idea. Probably someone who has used this phone might be able to give you a better idea.

My answers are in bold

Re: The iPhone Thread: Update iOS 5 announced!

I have a problem with my iPhone 4; I cannot be heard at the other end of the line.
It fell out of my hand and landed on the floor a couple of days ago, but it was working fine till this morning. There has been no other impact on the phone.

I have tried to 'reboot' it and also reset all the settings. On a friends recommendation I also switched off and restarted the data connectivity. What can I do to redress this issue?
I have bought it from Europe, so not sure how to get this resolved in India (Pune)

I appreciate any advice/ tips you can provide

Try using it with the headset and see if it works. If yes, you may have damaged your mic or it's connection.

Thanks Tejas@perioimpl; I will try this as soon as I get home. I forgot to bring the headset today.
If the mic or its connection is damaged, will this have to be resolved at the Apple store? sorry to be a bit basic, just not aware if the iPh 4 can now be repaired in India.

Unless you are very keen on giving a surprise gift, don't make your own decision on this. Women consider other factors like compactness, color, looks, etc., over performance and features. Take her to a big mobile shop that has lots of working demo phones, let her short list the phones she likes. Then you can compare the tech features, and pick the most appropriate one from that list. My wife bought a Nokia 3710 calm shell phone recently. She only cared about the fact that it is small (fits in her fist) and comes in plum color.
