Ps. That iClarified page is from a long time ago, unless you are on the right firmware versions, it will cause a lot more harm than good.
my phone was on 2.2, and i was unable to receive sms's, so was trying to downgrade it. now iam trying to restore the phone with itunes.

I see Steve Jobs on my iphone, just a second ago and it now comes up with the loading logo (pineapple) then straight to a cartoon figure (Steve Jobs) with his hands stretched out saying nPEBEA

This is what I see.

Just do a DFU restore to 2.2 using iTunes. And then follow the iClarified tutorials for Jailbreak/Unlock etc.

SMS issues if any really cannot reallly be helped by a downgrade. They are mostly caused by the phone getting the message center numbers wrong. Please google, I am sure there are enough pages on how to set the message center numbers...

Itunes has the latest 2.2.1.
Do not restore to that as the jailbreak hasn't come for it so far. ( AFAIK)

ALERT

A friend of mine inserted his IDEA sim card in my phone and checked the network. The iphone showed some number and not Idea as the network. After 5 mins the Idea sim was removed and my Airtel sim card was put back in - since then the network is shown as IDEA

I restarted the phone and also went and changed the network manually to no avail !!

Any idea how to get rid of IDEA and get back AIRTEL on my network ?

Wait for sometime to see if the network updates.
Try accessing Safari or email via EDGE.
Try rebooting a couple of times with and without your Airtel Sim inserted.

Sorry but that is incorrect. I have been running on 2.2.1

The jailbreak has been available for over a week now.

Sir , is the phone a 3g or the older gen.
And if the 3g, then has it been unlocked using a rebel sim or the yellowsn0w method.

It's a 2G iPhone.

@ Srijit - it's been 4 hours now. The GPRS is active - works properly. I also rebooted with the Airtel sim inserted - it still shows Idea.

Actually, there is an app which used to convert this display to anything you want. But, is there any way of confirming that it is using IDEA's network and not airtel's?

Shutdown phone, remove sim, restart phone. Should show no sim.
Shutdown again and insert Airtel SIM.

Or else check Cydia to see if there are any solutions.

N_C. Try calling and recieving calls.
If its fine. The you can use an app to change the carrier name.

Or else. Another option is to restore and jailbreak and unlock the 2g phone again.

Did you try resetting network settings? In most of the cases, it works. However, if you have set a lot of settings already, you will have to redo them.
