Re: The iPhone Thread

Although I admire revolutions brought by Apple, but when it comes to its cables, it is utterly disappointing.

Given the pathetic battery capacity of iPhone 6, it requires frequent charging and remains on socket most of the time.

First lightning cable

Lesson: Do not hold the rubber part of cable, it gives up easily. Always try holding by the harder part.

Replaced lightning cable

Lesson: The harder part of cable is shiny and doesn't grip well. Good luck if your fingers are oily or you have sweaty palms. Anyhow, the hard part also doesn't last long.

Keep paying Apple a hefty 1800/- to replace this brilliantly designed engineering marvel.

Re: The iPhone Thread

Try cable from Anker or Amazon Basics. Those manage to last.

Was wondering as to why the cable is so discoloured. The lightning port seems to have a layer of the pinkish paste on it.

Re: The iPhone Thread

I’ve put a couple of heatshrink sleeves on both sides of an old cable.

That's a white balance artifact of camera, perhaps due to the cyan background.

Re: The iPhone Thread

In a dilemma.

Mom uses an iPhone 6s 16GB for the last 4 years. 16GB is the problem here. Thinking of upgrading to the following:

Option 1 - iPhone XR 128GB (INR 41,000/- approx.)
Misses out on the following (compared to iPhone 11)
- ~ 200 mAh of battery capacity
- Super wide-angle lens
- Deep fusion
Option 2 - iPhone 11 64GB (INR 48,000/- approx.)
Will be a compromise on storage space
Please suggest which one would be VFM. Haven't heard from many XR users here.

Definitely iPhone 11. 64 gb should be good enough and since you're looking at a long term use, best to pick up the more recent model.

In the case one doesn't have heatshrinks, wrapping Masking Tape (Link)or Electrical Tape (it may spoil a bit of the aesthetics) is a more readily-available option.

This is the reason my 30pin Connector of the 10yr old iPad 2 has survived everything that has come its way!

The Iphone 11 is better suited in the current scenario.
Reasons - Much better than the XR and long term usage.

You are doing it wrong if you are buying a replacement lightning cable from Apple itself. Amazom basics is less than half price and has great reviews too.
You may even find braided cables for well under ₹1000.
Same case with chargers, if you apple original breaks, buy a third party one of a reputed brand.

Absolutely. Most of the Apple OE cables in my house remain inside the box, where they are best performing and long lasting. My Amazonbasics cables are as old as my 6s and they are still working fine, except for one cable which developed issues with the connector on one side and would only charge in one side. Even in the cars, the Apple OE cable never lasts and will get worn out in no time. Hence its Amazon basics all the time for me. We have around a dozen cables together in the house and the cars.

The ones I got are manufactured by Foxconn, and the quality is really good. Apart from Amazon Basics, I have used MTT which didnt last long, and another Apple MFI certified braided cable so far. I dont see a reason to buy the Apple cable.

Dupes are cheaper, agreed. However, there is lot of research that goes into OEM charging design that balances between, charging rate, battery longevity and battery safety.

That is the reason apple has MFi certification and Amazon basics are certified. You are absolutely not getting junk from them and they are not dupes. They are just 3rd party certified cheaper cables.
There is absolutely no reason to buy original apple as replacement. I have numerous non apple chargers and never faced issues except once when I had really cheap NON Certified cable which stopped working after iOS update.

If you think you are getting peace of mind by buying original then by all means go for it. I would rather save the money and spend on something else. And let me tell you I am actually a firm believer of "Mehenga Roye Ek Baar, Sasta Roye Baar Baar" but still won't spend on original when not necessary.

Hi, did you enquire about IPhone 12 Pro Max? Is it having the similar waiting period?

12 Pro Max is available off the shelf! No issues with that. One can easily reserve a copy & pick it up at the nearest store. Even the 12 & Mini are sufficiently available.

It’s only the Pro that is an issue.

This is my original lightning cable after 3.5 years which I had received with the phone.

I don’t think they are all that bad, as long as one is careful with the usage. Sure they are a bit delicate; but the overall quality isn’t so bad.
I use this very cable on the wall charger, powerbank and also my car charger.

The 11 for sure. It’s a huge step up from the XR in almost everything.
If above two are the only choices then the 11 still makes sense with a compromise in terms of storage.

If you can strech a bit & go for the 11 128 gb, nothing like it!

Mods: Sorry for the back to back posts.
