Yes unlock is available for OS ver 3 so you can unlock, will cost some bandwidth to download.

Yes all the software works plus some more which are not approved by apple.

To add to Jaggu's points:

An unlocked phone will work with any carrier/sim
A locked phone will only work with a particular apple authorized carrier/sim

Now, you can take a locked or unlocked iphone and jailbreak it. Jailbreaking will allow you to add non apple approved software via Cydia or Icy.

Remember, if you have a unlocked phone (hacked) and apple releases a software update and you apply it, it will lock your phone and re unlocking will be required. So search the net before applying updates.
This is also true for iTunes updates; a new itunes update may lock your jailbroken phone. So be careful before applying that as well.

EDIT: Most of the times during the process of unlocking the iphone (hacking), it is also jailbroken and these terms(unlock and jailbreak) are thus used interchangeably many a times as well by many people (although they are different)

The iphone clone i9 is now being sold for around Rs. 3800. At that price, general opinion is that it is worth it as it permits Java application downloads and is slick in design !!

Now launch of the iphone is touted towards end of august and is apparently supposed to be priced at 50,000. Ridiculous! I'm ordering mine from the US.

Tejas its all rumors dont go by them, wait for Aug last week and then decide if its really worth the effort, ie getting it from US

Uncle is coming down on 20th sept so i still have time to see. I wouldn't mind paying 5K extra max, but not anymore for sure.

Maybe i'll order a new macbook pro then!

any reason why the high prices there ? just buy on contract and break it, its cheaper than. is 600 bucks official unlocked phones ? i dont think so.

It's not easy buddy. You need a social security number, if you break contract your credit history goes down. The penalty is very high to get out of the contract too which makes it even more unviable.

Like someone mentioned earlier, only hope is Hong Kong as I believe they sell without contract only.

Went to heera panna yesterday. Grey market prices for 3GS: 36,500 for 16GB and 45,000 for 32GB without bargaining. Surprisingly, the 32GB is very very much lighter than my 16GB 2G iPhone.

Checked out the 3GS, it's super fast compared to the 2G.

They are taking back the 16GB 2G iPhone for 10K (mine has a highly scratched back; iPhones with less scratches may fetch a thousand more)

@Jesal, $600 is for contract free iPhones which people may want to buy as gifts, but they are still locked.
Don't forget to add nearly 60 odd dollars as taxes.
