is there a way to unofficially unlock iphone 4 without jailbreaking it?

another question: my iphone 4 has iOS 4.1 and baseband is 02.10.04. is it possible to jailbreak and unlock this?

No. There's no way to UNLOCK with Jailbreaking your phone. Do note you'll have to give up on your warranty when you unlock.

iOS 4.1 can be jailbroken using limerain, redsn0w on PC or pwnage tools if you're running Mac OS and can be unlocked using the latest version of Ultrasn0w. As of last Sunday Ultrasn0w now supports baseband 2.10.04.

Hi Jaggu,

Yes the EDGE came as soon as i synced it with itunes. When synced with Itunes came to know the firmware is 4.1. updated it to 4.2.1 firmware. i have few questiosn.

1. how to check the base band. i have no clue about it.
2. How check the retina display. I downloaded the user manual for 4.2.1. it says that towards my right left hand bottom corner i need to have the retina display, but i cant find the icon. Am i missing something here.

2) I did not understand, iPhone 4 by default comes with Retina display.

Is it possible to downgrade to 4.0 from 4.1?

i read on a link that we can downgrade baseband in 4.1 and then unlock it. is it true?

This might be a blast from the past for many (with 4.x and all), but i need help.

I want to update my wife's 1G phone, currently on 2.2 to firmware 3.1.3. It needs to be unlocked and jailbroken. I was thinking of using RedSn0w (0.8 - older version). So for the question is - will 3.1.3 work in 1G? Any issues with battery life or performance? And finally is RedSn0w the best tool for the job?

Go here and follow the steps. iClarified - Unlock Wizard for iPhone

3.1.3 was stable, fast and optimized. So you should be fine with the install.

Slightly OT here...But is it possible to add a certain custom message and tone to show-up and play when i :

A. Power-on/Start-up my iphone ?

B. "slide to unlock" my iphone ?

I'm talking iphone 4 (Not locked) here with the latest software versions.

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Check out Cedia app's there should be some options available for customizing. But you will have to do a jailbreak to install Cedia in the first place. Boot logo can be changed using Cedia, this am sure.

My cousin is coming from US in 3 days and I have told her to check for the availability of a 3GS / 4G. She isnt keen on getting a 3GS as she is using one and says there are network issues.

From what I have been able to gather till now, there is no proper unlock for 4G yet. Request you all to guide me whether I should tell her to pick a 4G for me. Also I dont think there are any reported issues with 3GS so I feel can safely go ahead with the 3GS. Anyone has an idea about the in-store prices of 16 and 8GB 3GS?

No expert, but will try to address a few of your queries. The unlockability of the iPhone 4 depends on the baseband / iOS version preinstalled on it. My friend here has been happily using his software-unlocked iPhone 4 running on 4.0 for more than two months now. If your phone will have 4.2, you're gonna have to wait.

I went with the 3GS as well when I had to choose between the two, but that's only because I have an iPod for backup and don't care much for added capacity, so an 8GB iPhone 3GS was just fine for me. You decide, the iPhone 4 can be worth the extra money sometimes, depends on what you want from a phone.

And yes, since June '10 the 16GB 3GS has been discontinued. With the launch of the iPhone 4, the 3GS 8GB was also introduced into the market and that's the only new one you can get right now.
