I prefer the plan of paying 10K and using the phone with a contracted connection.
I don't get your point. If you do the calculations, 10K with a contract for 2 years will get you close to the $699 that one would pay for a contract-free phone in the US. Like I said, the iPhone is the only Apple product which is overpriced in India, thanks to the cellular operators.

Thanks a lot Sir !! That surely helped. Unfortunately the iphone 4 which we were trying to unlock is on baseband 03.10.01 :( So no luck

re: The iPhone Thread: iPhone 4 launch 27 May 2011

I just did a little R&D...not sure how accurate this is, but i see that it is probably cheaper to get an iPhone in India (if you just want to flaunt it)

Airtel :

Offer duration 24 months
Monthly offer charges Rs. 1000
A2A local minutes 950 mins
Local SMS 1000 sms
Data (3G*) 600 MB
Rental discount Rs. 500

Therefore, net payment in 2 yrs = 34500 +500*24 = 46500 INR

-----
Now, I dont know how plans work in USA, but if you go to the AT&T site and look for iphone plans, and choosing the mimima :

Initial (activation + taxes) in California zip 95036 : 259.03 $
Plan: Nation 450 w/Rollover® Minutes $39.99
Services: DataPlus 200 MB for iPhone $15.00

Therefore, net payment in 2 yrs = 259 + 1320 = 1579$ = 71055 INR

-----

[I guess I should join some marketing team ]

Guys there is no confirmation of unlock, infact this report says its going to be locked. iPhone 4 India Launch Tomorrow : 27th May 2011 : Airtel and Aircel reveal details | iGyaan.in

Earlier also iPhone was available through outlets and one can choose either Airtel or Vodafone. So this arrangements stays only difference is this time its Aircel instead of Vodafone.

3G with push off should give minimum 2 days. Move to OS 3.2.1 (iirc google check please) which is the most bug free for 3G processor. I used to get 2 days easily on my 3G when i sold it after 2 years of use, was running 4.1.x only issue was the lag thanks to heavy OS.

Not as big as it was made out to be, happens with most handsets on 3G when signal is weak, including BB, Nokia's etc. Its more to do with network switching between 3G and 2G. Software fix has improved the situation quite a bit. Infact am having terrible issue with a new nokia handset, same location where my iPhone 4 works fine. Need to get it checked.

You must be joking, even hard core Android guys will not debate on iOS user interface (UI) Vs Android. Functionality it might be the otherway since androids are more open.

Again 101% agree, above was my views after using all sorts of gadgets including BB phones over very long periods. Apart from push email which is limited to couple of accounts, BB is totally a rip off. Especially you land up paying 500-800 bucks per month using all the functionality of a BB device on a monthly basis.

If you are in a hurry, try for Gevey sim solution. Google it out, available in Indian grey shops.

Well atleast then its a small relief. But then it says no free data charge etc, still worth it especially for someone like me who likes to go BSNL when on roaming

Thanks , 31K for 32 Sounds yummy . Is it a factory unlocked one?
While coming to India I might get a stopover in Dubai , Do duty free also offer the same price?

16GB from Airtel is 34000+ , here in USA you can get same for ~$650 .

Anyone of you know what GEVEY SIM means?

NEW APPLE IPHONE 4 16GB BLACK 4.2.1 GEVEY SIM UNLOCKED | eBay

Buying something like this makes sense ? Or should I get the one being offered from Airtel?

Get it from Singapore people. Its unlocked and many people are using it.
EDIT: That SIM cutter tool might be required. In Bangalore people have
got it done from various Bazaars, burma bazaar etc.
Frankly, iPhone 5 is around the corner, I don't know why we have to
use left overs from people who think we are still 3rd world.

A newer version of the iPhone will always be around the corner
I agree it's more reasonable to bring/ source an unlocked one from abroad. I do not understand why electronics are so exorbitantly priced here, is the customs duty that high?

That is hard to believe. Why does Apple not sell the phone directly in that case? If its unlocked, why have Airtel/Aircel in the picture?

Re: The iPhone Thread: iPhone 4 launch 27 May 2011

Am certain - iPhone 5 will be launched this June!

Else it would not have been launched in India with such fanfare.

OT : Was wanting to buy MBP 13" - some 69k INR, wonder if I should wait for June to see what they are coming out with

Re: The iPhone Thread: iPhone 4 launch 27 May 2011

Guys can someone throw some more light on this offer from airtel for the Iphone 4 32gb? Is there some catch in the offer? How much do I end up paying in the end. I am a little lost with all the calculations.

Re: The iPhone Thread: iPhone 4 launch 27 May 2011

The catch is that you need to shell out the required iPhone costs (40,900/- for 32Gb model) after that you keep on paying Airtel/Aircel for the plan on which you get the discount.

Airtel (postpaid)
You get 1900 mins A2A local minutes + 1 GB Data transfer + 2000 local sms every month.

The monthly rental is approx 2000 and they give a discount of 1000 so (1000 x 24=24000)

Aircel (postpaid)
You get 2250 mins A2A local minutes + 1 GB Data transfer + 1000 local sms every month.

The monthly rental is approx 2510 and they give a discount of 1710 so (1710 x 24=41040)
