Then it does not make any sense to buy from here. 255W has bluetooth and costs just 5k ($120) in US.

Hi I am also in the same boat with my JVC AVX-836. :)
By the way, navigation device from SatGuide was for 10, 290/- when I checked it last on 20th Oct. Today it is showing 13890.
I sent them a mail and asked for further discount which they refused but offered 3 free upgrades instead of regular 2 upgrades.
If you are interested in buying, just drop them a mail, I am sure they will be ready to sell it for 10,290/-.
Or we can bargain for 2 units. :) |
Hi Mukesh - I am like you hoping for some feedback before forking out 10-20K on this particular device. I would prefer to see a demo actually.
If I like it, we could certainly negotiate with them for a price.

Yikes! The good news ends there. But I think their premium pricing is vis a vis the likes of Indian products like MMI and SG.
Folks,
Based on the prevailing sentiment on this thread I have gone ahead and purchased a Garmin Nuvi 205W from Argos UK. Costed me ~Rs 7200.
I have now ordered satguide maps for Rs.990 as the coupon code did not seem to work for me. Satguide responded by saying that I will receive this tomorrow.
This is the VFM combination. Price of Garmin is bit higher in UK (like anything else).

Thats what even I thought. Amazon lists 205W in the range of 90-100$.
If it comes from UK, it should come with maps of UK, and perhaps even maps of Europe. This would be my reason for buying there, or from there, if and when I do.
A frequent visitor to, say, USA, might be well advised to source their unit there.
Offtopic: Is a "W" (widescreen) model really useful?
Offtopic2: Speaking of VFM, a friend (@arindam.ray in Team-bhp) bought 255W for himself ($120) and 1100 for me ($99). TTS is something I don't miss too much, neither Bluetooth (if that could have been used for gpx file transfer then yes). Moreover it is so slim that slips into shirt pocket so easy to use during walk/bike.
Ontopic: I bought 2 copies of Satguide Garmin maps for 475/- each during Navaratri promotion. Compared to MMI, this is definitely more buggy. But given that my other alternative is costing 15x I can never get a better VFM. Whole problem solved in $99+Rs.475 ~= Rs.5.2k
Ontopic2: I am trying to build a database of usual locations of Speedguns in Bangalore.
Maps are cheap, UK maps are available on ebay.co.uk for 20 pounds. And maps get outdated in few months time.
If you are going to use it in India, its cheaper to buy device from US and add maps for the country you are visiting. Of course UK prices are still better than prices in India.

I think so, shows more of the map and scrolling is easier.

Prices are good and if you can wait for 5 - 6 business days, shipping is free on most sites (E.g. Amazon / Buydig)

Not sure why MMI has this absurd price. MMI's maps for other platforms (Windows mobile / Symbian) cost 2 - 3k
with software. Charging 7k just for maps does not make any sense.
I got a Garmin Nuvi 1360 (India specific version). Its got the Nevteq maps. Are these maps different from the ones offered by MMI and SatNav? Which one offers a better interactivity and feature? I have not used either of these before, so, have no point of reference as to where NevTeq maps stands. Will the maps from either one (MMI or SatNav) be compatible with Nuvi 1360?

Yes so you have 3 options today for India maps: (1) Navteq City Navigator, that is available with Garmin (pre-installed if bought India version, else $99) and with all Nokia Ovi maps, (2) Satguide.in (Rs.990) and (3) MMI (Rs.7000). Please see
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadget...ml#post2096587 for a feature comparison I have done earlier. And yes both MMI/Satnav sells Nuvi compatible maps. If you are inside city, you can stick to pre-installed City Navigator only.

Navteq is now a Nokia company, so its maps are used on Nokia Ovi as well. From quality point of view, you can check these maps at maps.ovi.com, for 80 cities that it covers, coverage is best as compared to other two (MMI / Satguide).
Here are my requirements.
- Should be large display, 5 inch
- I don’t want to hang it in the windshield. I want to fit it in the dashboard area (not in-dash but say near the AC vents). I want to clamp it so it’s easily removable
- Since it will be slightly inside will it need an extra receiver?
- Buy it here (Bangalore) from MapmyIndia / Satguide or get from US (Garmin) and load maps here. Am asking this because I went to one of the authorised MapmyIndia dealer to check out but they refused to give me demo of any large screen version. They said I need to pay advance – only then they will order and get it for me. In other words buy it – even if it may to may not suit my requirements. Am not comfortable with that.
- Extra features like multimedia, Bluetooth, reverse parking is optional for me.
I got a mail from Satguide about discounts on their devices for Diwali. The lowest one starts from 5000 Rs and the WinCE model costs 8000 Rs I guess and will come pre loaded with India maps, if i'm not mistaken. Sounds like a good deal.
@Rocky 4.3 inch is a decent display for GPS. And its better buy through Amazon and ask someone to carry it for you. You get the best deal that way.
If BT for you is optional, then best VFM product is 205W.
