Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Hi guys, I was looking to buy the licence for Sygic navigation app.

1) One option is to buy from within the app. Charges 19.99 euro.
2) There is another app in play store Sygic+MapmyIndia for appx. Rs. 1400.

Which of the above is best option? Does Sygic comes with TomTom maps in option 1? Or is the same?

I think Sygic comes only with MMI maps. So App store should give Indian MMI maps under Sygic.

I bought from the Sygic site. I still get updates from stupidly-named "Play." (well, updates is an exaggeration: I've had one!).

MMI is The India-map supplier for Sygic: there is no choice or alternative.

Bought it from the sygic website. Price was 100 bucks more than on the play store app. Bought it with the hope that if sygic decides to upgrade to TomTom maps for india, there will be free upgrade.

Any idea which the countries listed in the "Whole World" are?
Im interested mostly in maps of countries where I would wish to take a "driving holiday" sometime...
Specifically my requirement is for an iPhone.

Garmin 3950 can only see 4.
Can you tell me which feature exactly should be present in a smartphone to connect to a GPS satellite without the need of a data card.
thanks

First and foremost, a GPS receiver. Although phones can get a rough idea of position just by using the information they constantly have about which cell towers they are close too, real navigation doesn't get far without the real thing: the GPS receiver.

That's the hardware. For offline navigation you need offline maps.

Almost all smartphones already have everything that is required for using GPS. Except Nokia Asha, any other recent phone already has in-built GPS.

Only thing you need is to purchase a Map application. Some phones (E.g. Nokia) have it for free, for others (iPhone, Android) you need to pay 1400 - 2500 for an application.

Yes, both have GPS receiver. If 4S was purchased in last 3 -4 months (I.e. manufactured after October 2011), it has a GLONASS receiver as well.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Today, I bought Sygic Maps from sygic.com for 1473. Sygic + MMI are available in playstore for 1375. I paid 100 extra to get that 5 license benefit. Though, I had installed sygic maps full version by other means and used it for around two months. But, the app quality convinced me to shell out 1.5k.

Have downloaded all the maps and all English (UK, US and AUS) voices. Would be trying each one of them in next few days . Liked English AUS (Diane) but it doesn't speak the name of the road. Using TTS English US (Steven) at present.

Still trying to find the best TTS voice that is clear and can pronounce our street names better that others. Any favorites here?

I use TTS English US (Allison). not that she pronounces any better, but somehow to me, the high pitched female voice is clearer than the male.
