Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Can someone tell me which is the best free app in Android for Offline GPS maps and navigation.
I also want a app which is not download heavy as I do not have a Wi-Fi connection at home.
I just want detailed maps and voice navigation, other details like POI features etc are not required.

Sygic seems to be of 750 MB and free only for 7 days. Will its voice navigation work after 7 days free period?

I downloaded MapFactor Navigator but its maps are not detailed at all and the GUI is no where close to google.

Other apps which I have read about is:
1) Here maps
2) Waze
3) Navmii/Navfree

I am confused as I cannot use and try each map before I begin my journey coming week.

As of I am interested in free apps only, might be after my journey I can think of buying offline maps

Please help.

Amazing. I didn't know that

It wasn't back in the days when I paid for it, but I'm glad it is now.

Here Maps Beta for Android - Offline Maps by Nokia

I too tried installing it on my Zenfone 5 but got a message "device not supported". Shot off a mail to Here. Got a reply after a few days. Apparently currently the phones running intel processors are not supported by Here; maybe they will remedy it in the times to come.

My friend has it installed on his Samsung Grand and he's quite happy with it - he says it's very accurate and fairly clutter free, though not as updated as google maps, (but at least the phone doesn't heat up and drain battery as quickly while on google maps). All in all, IMO it is the best (free) offline maps solution for mobiles.

Cheers !

Yesterday, I downloaded Sygic Android app and also the map data for India ( 700 MB approximately ) and it's free only for a trial period of just 7 days.

Sygic and mmi has gone separate ways. Sygic now uses TomTom whereas mapmyindia has a new app called navimap. Sygic is free for 7 days only

Ahh... That's cleared that up. Thanks.

It also explains why India is now included in "world" and why the India maps are compatible with other-country maps. For a while they were not [at least not with some].

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Was using Google Maps on my Xperia Z until the voice assist disappeared on it's own a few days back. Tried every setting and reinstalling the Maps application, nothing worked. Booted it.

Switched to Nokia Here. Same story. Voice assist ceased to work once in motion. Also, very innacurate positioning.

Mapmyindia was a total waste. Consumed immense bandwidth. No voice assist. No correct location and routes.

Finally downloaded Open Street Maps (OSM) yesterday. Downloaded necessary stuff within the app. It's an offline map software. Works like a gem. Shows the correct route, with a very clear voice assist. GPS takes some time to find your position, but once it's done, works fine. No hidden costs involved.

Re: The GPS/Maps Discussion Thread (Dedicated Satnav, Smartphones, Tablets, etc)

Just like most other user's who have posted here, I am torn between buying a dedicated GPS unit vis-a-vis using my Note 2 as a GPS device. My primary grouch is that on Maps, at a flyover, the voiceover tells me to take a 'slight left' when it actually means that 'do not take the flyover but the road that goes next to it'- I want that kind of clarity. Usually this happens and I realize it later because I'm too busy driving. So, is this possible on any dedicated GPS device like Garmin or MMI? Also, is there a map app available for Android that can provide as explicit instructions as these? Thanks

Which version of MMI were you using ? I have a paid iOS app Don't Panic from MMI. These are offline maps but most of the times I end up using Google Maps. Google Maps ETA are usually spot on. I rely on MMI only when there are data connectivity issues
