You can also try a free app called I8kFanGUI. Google for it.

Its a great app for dell laptops as it displays temperatures of CPU, GPU, Memory and lets you see and control the status of the cooling fans...

Your dell should last you between 2 to 3 hours if you are using the 6 cell battery. My thinkpad lasts me between 7-8 hours if used moderately. (i have a 12/15 cell battery in effect)
Best way to save battery is to lower brightness, turn off wireless devices if they are not being used and change the power plan so that it underclocks the cpu. You can notice almost 20-30% difference if these are followed.

Cooldude & Abhi , Thanks for your advice. My Dell Battery usually lasts for 3 hours. But my battery had got exhausted one week after my 1 year warranty. So i had to buy a new one for 3k. Now its running for 3 hours.

Thanked: Once

Dell seems to have put in some timer sort of thing into their batteries.
My laptop too is showing me a warning and I believe that too has hardly gone past the one year mark.
Team to call the It helpdesk and ask for a new battery.

OT: does anyone know if the 3 year extended warranty in dell covers the battery too.
AFAIK atleast in acer and HP/compaq it doesnt

The extended warranty on the DELL does not include the battery. It only has a limited warranty of 1 year. Regarding the battery error, is it an Inspiron 1501 you have there?
