Same sort of ordeal was experienced by a friend of mine here in Bangalore. He actually shifted to unlimited plan, and then to make full use of the plan, downloaded whatever he could find. Finally end of the month he got a bill for Rs 25,000/-. He is yet to pay the bill.

YetiBlog® - 23rd June 2008 - Almost over now

1.35 pm

Mrs. J is free. I knock, enter and offer her the information I have.
Aha! This is what I needed to see.
I smile weakly.

OK your bill will be amended. But there is some calculation to be done. From the 1st to the 5th is normal 399 then from the 5th to the 31st is 849/-
I start to tell her that the 4 pages are not complete, then I decide to keep quiet.

This will take time, she says, a few days to calculate.
OK, but my due date is 27th.
That is fine, you will get a fresh calculation before that date, otherwise we will extend your date.
OK Madam, so now what have I to do?
She writes a note, explaining details to recalculate and dates.

Take your bill and this note to Mrs. A. Ask her to recalculate your bill.
Uhh Thank you ma'm.

I find Mrs. A. Once again I am expected to repeat the ENTIRE story about my internet usage and the incorrect bill.
After the entire story - Ahhh 642?? You go to Mrs. K.

Mrs K listens to my story again. Nods and takes my bill.

I will recalculate later. It will take some days.
OK Madam, so what should I do now?
Nothing, when your bill is recalculated I will call you. Give me your numbers.
Well, you have my landline number, take my mobile number too.
OK.
Mrs. K can I have your number if I need to follow up?
She kindly gives me her number.

2 pm
I leave the exchange and get on my way to the office.15 minutes after I have left the exchange my Dad receives a phone call at home.

Calling from Bandra Exchange!
Yes?
Your revised bill is ready.
Ready?
Yes.
What is the amount?
Rs. 1401/-
Where can I get the bill?
At the sewa centre.
Thank you.

He calls me, all excited.
Woh logon ne apne aap bill correct kar diya.
Apne aap? What are you CRAZY? I was there all morning!

The next day we send someone to pick up the revised bill.

The details:
Internet usage - NIL
Phone calls made - 0

Total amount Rs. 1401/-
This figure includes Rs. 290/- for the phone rental, Rs. 80/- for the modem Rental, the taxes and surcharges and everything. So now I gather I have been charged Rs. 849/- for the internet and nothing else!

Something tells me that nobody calculated and adjusted anything. A quick approximate total was made in 15 minutes after I left.

It matters not. I received a bill for a reasonable figure and I paid. The experience was the company was harrowing, but not the MTNL employees, I bear them no grudge and I am thankful my work was eventually done.

Thank you for enjoying my story and I hope you learn something from it. I would be happy to help if someone has any similar trouble.

Goodbye!!

Nice story. I've had a similar experience with Reliance. I got the amount reversed and it took them only 10 months to do it. I didn't pay the erroneous amount. Then when they adjusted the amount, they billed for late payment for the erroneous amount. That took 2 months to resolve.

I will say what N_C is probably going to say. You need to improve your blog endings. lol.

Just kidding. very well written story.

It does not offer detailed usage with log on and log off times. Just the Data transfer.

All is well that ends well.

As usual, very aptly described by Sam. Felt like I actually visited MTNL office.

Are you sure? How will it get the data transfer info without login and logout times?

BSNL has login time, logout time, duration and data transfer details.

Well You are lucky your work got done, but not as lucky as me. Few months back I was charged NIL for Internet when my net usage is around a GB or so.

And you can actually log on to MTNL sites to get your usage yourself. Search for MTNL mumbai and follow the site to broadband page. there you have to enter your phn number as username and ur C no as your pass.

Sam, your walk through of the MTNL office has given me the Heeby Jeebies .

Can picture shadows lurking in the darkness, shady characters peering at you from behind pillars waiting for the sign from the Head of the Office to cast you into their dungeon (basement) where they banish people who have the audacity to question their 'kombuter ganerated billu' he! he!

Awesome- all's well that ends well.
Now why did i feel all would be ok- inspite of my woes with MTNL.
The staff is pretty ok if we are ok with them.
That small waiver just might be for all the trouble you undertook and still were polite to them- no harm in considering it so.

err... check it out later.
I think i do get log in and log out times in session history and total monthly usage and balance left and previous month's details too.

chk- mtnlmumbai 'dot' in
move cursor to broadband tab- select 'Check usage'- 4th from bottom
takes you to login page
your phone no is your login id, C.A. number on bill is your default password.
and you are in- explore and donot forget to log out.

Also take time off to read up on the triband homepage on how to change the pasword- has to be done at 2 ends, the server and your router.
Please do change your password for your own good.

Take care.

Hi,

Probably the first Yeti blog that is not flooded with 'Wow! a great story', 'Superbly written' and likewise compliments. Instead all that Sam takes home is the internet speeds and monthly plans/usage of team bhpians!

Once again a great write, Sam.

Many of us would have gone through a similar experience when dealing with government agencies. But very few look at the funnier side of it. And fewer would make a very interesting story out of it. You are one of those blessed few.

AFAIK it will work only if you login from a mtnl triband account. I may be wrong.
