@csentil: if you have only one such item (or just a few), then it is ok to pull out the $600 limit. Else, they can hassle you and waste your 2-3 hours making you open up, list everything, and then pay for the excess. Depends on your condition after the flight to take such **** :-)

In case total cost of items is below duty free allowance limit (Rs 25K), then can we pass through Green channel or does the law mandate you to go through Red one?

You can walk through the Green Channel.

Here's how most customs in India works. Your check in luggage gets scanned before it reaches the place where you pick up your luggage. During scanning if they find anything that looks like a dvd, camera, videocam or other electronic items, liquor etc, they put an X mark or some visible mark on the suitcase/luggage !! So when you take your luggage and walk out the customs guys look for these marks and then stop you.

Just be aware of your limit and if you are sure you can always challenge customs and most of the times if they find out you are aware of the rules they let you go.

That is not always the case, few years ago I arrived at IGIA N.Delhi on a late night flight. It was dusshera or something and all the airport employees were in a merry mood. I went right to the back of the belt and there was no scanner/xray or customs folks behind the belt. Chaps were just throwing luggage on to the belt system. There were no crosses on luggage or anything.

If you are within your limit and customs are trying to extract money then simply tell them you want to complain and see the commissioner for customs. They do not want any trouble so will usually tell you to get lost.

Remember you can carry 1 laptop duty free in addition to everything else. So take advantage of this and bring back laptops on every visit (unless you are carrying a works laptop).

I am close to sourcing quite a few items from US soon. I have a doubt regarding bills- people who are going to make the purchase and the ones who will carry it back are different. So question is, does having another person's name in bills cause any problems, and make a good excuse for officers to harass you??

Re: Please help me with details on "How to buy AV amplifier from U.S"

Hello everyone,

I am planning to buy a Denon S-760H from the US and getting it to India. Have 2 queries-

1. Will there be any hassle with customs?

2. I will have to use a step down voltage converter right? Any thing else to take care of? Any suggestions for a good voltage converter?

Thanks.

Why would you want to do that when it's available in India for 60k at AVstore.in.

1. If your friend is lucky he might get through without paying anything, but it's unlikely on a receiver.

2. The Denon may have a 110-230V switch on the rear panel. Check the specs
