re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

The 2 ton AC will be drawing around 10A current while running and at least 30A when starting, so 6A is just not right. (9.8 as per literature)
http://www.voltasac.com/index.php?op...4&cid=7&vr=164

With modern cables 2.5 sq.mm is the border line for 2 ton AC, 4 is preferred. The thinner the conductor the hotter it will get, which in hot ambient temparature will lead to insulation melting resulting in shor circuit and fire. So it is better to err on the thicker side and install 4 sq.mm.

Thank you for the warning diyguy. 4 sq mm it will be!

Remember that devices like ACs have a much heavier start-up load.
This is the same information(1.5 sqmm = light/fan circuit) conveyed to me by the AC technician. Going with the over spec wiring.

4 sqmm it will be! BTW, This is a 1TR AC - and it is 6A per Bluestar. But wont be taking risks - Will go for higher spec wiring.

Thank you all for your precious advice.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Guys,I have a completely newbie question related to split ACs, do the pipes have to filled with gas during installation?

I have installed a few ACs in my new house (still not completed), so have not tested out the ACs yet. Please advise.

@johy; Yes, the pipes need to be evacuated and then filled. This is along with the cooling coils. Normally the compressor unit is shipped with the refrigerant and once the valves are opened then everything goes, assuming there are no leaks.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Hi Friends, I need a small help.
I purchased Hitachi Summer QC 1.5 ton AC in June 2011. Since I purchased AC in the very first year of purchase it developed a problem with the front display panel and it took almost 3-4 weeks to get it replaced. And yesterday AC suddenly stopped working and displaying error code E9. After researching a lot on internet, I found that the error code is somehow associated with DC Fan moter. And as per different forums on internet it seems to be pretty expensive (Rs7000 approx). I am very disappointed with the product. I have 4 other ACs from Whirlpool, Carrier, Voltas but they have never developed any of the issue in the span of last more than 8 years.
Can anyone of you have email IDs of customer support head, Sales Head or escalation matrix, then it would be very helpful. Even after spending 30K for AC I am not getting peace of mind.

Thank you all in advance.

Question for fellow members:

I have 4 Daikin A/cs installed and have called for their AMC quotes. The charge is Rs.2200/- per AC which includes 4 visits i.e. one every quarter. The visit will include dry services and will be routine.

What I want to know is Rs. 525/- per visit reasonable and/or what should be a reasonable amc charge for these A/cs. All inputs will be helpful in finalizing the price and giving the AMC.

Sounds about right. If it covers parts replacement, it is cheap.
I have 4 acs but none under Amc. I find that once the dealer takes Amc it's a pain to get them to visit per our convenience. So I nowadays pay as I call them or just clean them myself...

I think doesn't include parts replacements. It covers 10 or so service checks that they carry out which included complete cleaning of the machines etc apart from the filter. My query is that are 4 services necessary and also 2 A/cs aren't used as frequently as the other 2 which are in the bedrooms. Please advise. And if I call them on adhoc basis what should be the frequency of their visits?

If it is not parts, I wouldnt go with all 4 with the same dealer. What happens is they try to service 2-3 a/c on the same visit and they end up doing a shoddy job on the 2nd and 3rd as they get tired and also we lose a whole day sitting with them. Best to call them adhoc whenever you want. I think instead of 525, they may charge you 600-650 per visit, but I think that is best.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Even I think that as you have 4 AC there is no need for AMC. I get my AC cleaned once a year, except the window type in my bedroom which collects a lot of dust on the outer coil, hence twice for it.

If the AMC were with parts it would be justified, but paying 10k each year is just not worth it - you get a free AC every third year. So I suggest that you negotiate the total service cost, call them once a year, and ensure that if there is only one set of service personell they service only 2 AC per day.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Hello all,

Delayed update but had gone ahead and purchased Hitachi 1.5 Ton Summer TM Model in June (sorry could not update the thread earlier). The AC is very nice and while the room is large, it does cool down the room quite effectively. Looks nice as well :-). So, for now, me and family are satisfied Hitachi customers. Purchased a V-Guard stabilizer as well (though had I been more regular with my visits to the forum, might have gone for maybe a Sollatek AC Guard instead). What is done is done for now though :-)

Anyone looking for details about the AC - http://www.hitachi-hli.com/productdetail/Summer-TM/

Thanks to sgiitk, bluevolt, khoj, anupmathur, akshay1234 for replying and providing inputs.

If it is a living room, you should be looking at a 2 ton unit.

@sukhoi; Window ACs do not normally need serious attention for ten plus years, so you should be Ok.

re: The home / office air-conditioner thread

Hello mates, I am posting this query on behalf of my sister. She is looking for 1.5T ac preferably window ac as she has recently joined civil services which involves transfers after some time so split won't be practical for her. She has set a budget of 30k(slightly moveable). We did checked some ac online but found that choices are not that great as compared to splits which is increasing the confusion part so please help us out.
EDIT- a tough machine is preferred which can bear frequent transportation.

Best bet is to find what brands are patronised by the Government. The service for these will be available where ever your sister is transferred.

Most of the window AC are quite tough and can be easily transported, provided
. You keep the original shipping carton, or else have a good wooden box specifically made to transport the AC
. You keep the restraining bolts for the compressor, which are taken off during installation, and use them while transporting. The same applies to most of the WM.

I remember that most of my friends who were in transferable jobs (Armed forces, Banks, Civil Service etc), had a boxes made for most of their appliances. They also had boxes for transporting crockery, cutlery and all the other delicate stuff. For the rest there were steel trunks which can withstand rough handling. At regular intervals, when they were transferred, they would pack every thing into custom made boxes, transport, unpack and store the boxes.

Thankyou very much for your useful extra inputs, can you please elaborate a bit on the patronised part?
