To me, it is akin to the petrol vs diesel debate. A 5 star inverter AC will pinch you once, but a 3 star AC will pinch you every month. You forget TCO as soon as you have bought it.

I find this confidence quite amazing - that you will always be able to see a major difference in the energy consumption month on month! Truth be known, there are so many parameters that affect the consumption that it is impossible to ever make out differences without having energy meters, thermometers and hygrometers connected permanently and being diligently monitored!

OK, I might be wrong, but this is my math:

Electricity cost per unit - Rs 7.5

Daikin 5 star inverter - 744 units per year = 62 units per month = Rs 465 per month
Daikin 3 star regular - 1600 units per year = 133 units per month = Rs 1000 per month

Savings Rs. 535 per month.

Give or take a few rupees, and still that's a lot of money.

When one finally puts Solar panels, I bet that individual will be cursing them self for not choosing a Inverter AC or even a 5 star inverter because in a regular AC the inrush current will be ruge and you will have to upsize the solar setup substantially.
Those who have ancient wiring or single phase power, again a inverter AC will be better because there is no Inrush current and the obvious lower power consumption.

That is in the back of my mind too. I also want a small diesel generator to power my electric flood pump. It would be nice if it powered an AC on midsummer power cut days too. Inverter makes it easier.

Check BEE website which is a government agency that does the testing and labeling of products(star rating).
There is a big difference in power consumption of a 5 star inverter vs regular Acs.
The units shown in BEE website is the annual power consumption calculated at a total running of 1600hrs/year.

We run 3 AC from end March to end September : around 200 days/year
. Bedroom 1 - 18 hrs
. Room 1 - 12 hrs
. Room 2 - 4 hours

That is around 34 hours for 200 days = 6,800 hours per year. Top slab for Electricity including all taxes is Rs.8.75 in South Delhi, so, the total outflow on AC = 59.5K per year

a saving of even 25% will be 14.8K, a substantial amount even if divided amongst 3 AC.

Add to that starting load of at least 4 times the running load, and the case for Inverter AC builds itself, especially if you want support from Solar Panels/Inverter

LOL, quite some mistake!
You've used the 'KWHrs per year' (annual energy consumption) figure of the inverter AC and compared it to the 'Wattage' rating of the three star AC!!
No wonder I found the numbers hard to believe.

So I finalised the air conditioning plant. Went ahead with Diakin VRF inverter 48 hp plant. The installer is from Chandigarh and is very professional. He will take about 15 days for the entire installation. Also included is a central monitoring unit and fresh air ventilation. Got a really good deal compared to the other installers. The entire plan looks great and if it turns out well, will go ahead and install a smaller VRF plant at my home too. It seems that it provides much better power savings compared to installing separate 5-6 splits.

Could you share the model numbers and costs. 48HP is around 10T, and I am looking for 8T-10T solution.
