Installing window AC --- (In window, of course; some people have right-size hole in the wall)... Carpentry and probably destruction of window frame.

Installing split AC --- One small hole in wall. If there is somewhere convenient to place the outdoor unit. Some plumbing and more wiring is added, but all can be done quite quickly.

When I came to move out of a rented place, I wished I had gone for split. It would have been much easier to make good that hole rather than to replace an entire window frame, as the landlord insisted.

(of course, the new tenants put a split ac in our newly-made window frame!)

Hi AWD,

I Suggest you got for O General. This is the best AC. Have been using OG for over 15 years now, and all the ACs in our home are Ogeneral s only. Only periodic servicing for cleaning the filters and gas filling which is very rare.

Yes, OG is good and so is Daiken. After years of having used both of these at my home(s) and office(s) in Delhi and Bombay, my last purchase in 2008 was a Mitsubishi Electric split for my cabin in Bombay.

As good as either of the big guns at nearly 2/3rd the price with bill and warranty. Whether this is available in Chandigarh is a question.
AWD you could also try out Panasonic( good for sustained long runs), Toshiba or Sanyo. The first two especially Panasonic are quite aggressive in the North Indian market and Panasonic brand shops are like mushrooms these days. I have nearly five of these within 5 kilometers driving distance around my house in Delhi.

People whatever you do, don't buy samsung, i have 5 a/cs at home 4 samsung which have conked off one after the other, 3 had their compressors replaced (luckily under warranty) within 2 years. But the one voltas i have has lasted me 7 years without any problem.

Guys feature wise nowadays almost all the brands of AC’s have similar features.

But the test of the pudding is eat it that is the amount of power consumed by an AC. Yesterday saw an article in TOI which says that 40% of electricity in Mumbai is consumed by AC’s. So as a responsible citizen we should buy products which are highest possible energy efficiency, thus lowering your individual power demand.

Attached is a list of so called BEE 5 Star Rated AC’s, Note EER stands for energy efficiency ratio which translates in simple terms as “higher the better”

My personal preference will be General & Hitachi.

Go Green…..every small step counts.

If you really want to save on power then opt for a/cs with inverter technology. This is a real power saver, especially for people who use a/cs for longer hours. The only catch is the initial purchase price which at the moment is nearly 60% higher than a comparative standard a/c. Hopefully as the availability/usage increases the prices will start to come down.

I need 2 split ac's for my bedrooms of area 120sqft each. One bedroom is east facing and other west facing. The east facing one is usually cool and also receives cool breeze in the night hours. My budget is around 45K.
Hitachi has a 5 star model - Acecutout 0.9 ton with a price of 25990 + stabilizer Vguard - 2300 = 28,290. (Price without negotiation). Please advice whether I can buy the Hitachi one for west facing room and a 0.75 ton of different brand for east facing room.
If yes, please suggest a reliable brand for 0.75 ton ac that would fit in my budget.

I believe that a 0.75 ton would be small for a 120 sq feet room, even with the high humidity levels in cochin. 1 tonners for both rooms is what I would go with.

Try Videocon as the low cost option for the second a/c

i am in jaipur.last year i installed 5 panasomic splits in my home,model 18 hkf,1.5 ton.really i cherish my purchase.they are highly efficient and too good in cooling in harsh jaipur climate.

Guys, I have a small study room that's 10ft x 6ft, with a big window. What kind of AC would be ideal for this? Either split or window would do, but my budget is 15K. I was thinking of a 0.5 tonne unit, but none of the showrooms I enquired with had this in stock. The smallest they had was 0.75 tonne, which I think is overkill for a 60 sq ft room.
