Relocating to the US: Should I sell my nokia n95 8gig?

Guys need some advice.. I will be relocating to the US for an year or more in the first week of October.

I was wondering if it makes sense to sell my nokia n95 8gb (which I purchased in April 08) and get a phone there on contract? the iphone 3g or the rumored HTC G1 for example. You think this makes more financial sense?

I had bought the phone for Rs. 28,500 here and in American handset terms its pretty exhorbidant.

Pls advise!

No don't sell it. Just give it to me. I will be happy to keep it safe with me for one year.

Ebay it when you get to the US. Unlocked Nokia Top of the Range phone will command more value than in India - You should get $300 at the very least.

1. Sell here, if possible.
2. Go for a 1 yr contract there - with a suitable instrument. Remember you may not be able to use that instrument after you return. Unless you go for a GSM service, in which case you can continue to use it here on a local plan, after you return.
3. Buy a new model when you return.

Dude price for N95 8 gig has fallen. I bought it same price as you and now its for 25.500 (new with B&W) and resale is at 18-20k depending upon how much you can negotiate. So if you wanna sell this is the right time.

And ya if you had used 8 gig you wont like Iphone 3g. Trust me on this one!

How is the acceptance of unlocked phones in the US? Specially the ones not bought in the US in the first place?

Fat hopes you've got!!! I got a March 2008 phone with bill and warranty in May for Rs.20k!! I bought it to use as a GPS and Music player for my Eurotrip. Came back after a month and sold it sometime by the end of July for Rs.18k!!

Now we're in September you should be lucky if you get Rs.18k.

Certain cons are here to sell in US for no US model:
1. Same charger will not work, (so only indian might be interested).
2. US phones has different software which keep phone numbers in contact as per US standard like 999-999-9999, which will not work in Indian phones.
3.Generally even Phone companies too sell somewhat different models in US.

But why don't you yourself use this there, buy some cheap package with startup phone and use your phone in place of that. Man you bought this because you like it now you want to sell this in hurry

Man what do I say. I don't think selling it for 18k makes any sense.. losing 10k on a phone within 4.5 months and then selling I will have to think about.

But even 18k is $400 and while it can fetch me an iphone, I don't know if it will be able to fetch me an xperia or a HTC G1 or something.. really confused!

So I would need an American charger for the phone. Is there some other electrical adapter that I would need to prevent the phone from blowing up or something? I apologise for the stupid question guys but im a mechie and being true to others of my breed, I really haven't given too much thought to all things electrical in this world

Mind you, some plans in US charge for incoming calls also. You may need to watch your bills.

Also remember that the N96 is launching within the next few weeks, that will further reduce the price of new and second hand N95s. If you want to sell, take the best you can get now before the price drops even more!

I had never sold any of my phone starting from the time when mobiles got launched in India and now 8 gig. Spending a fortune and then getting peanuts in return within few months selling is something i cant digest. Thats why use the phone till the time it can be used and then dispose it.
And imo it will last atleast 3-4 years. Not a bad deal.
