if the computer beeps numerous times when u start up then it means there is a hardware problem and the key is physically stuck. why dont u try one thing. take an object and carefully wedge it in the gap below the key(CAREFULLY is the word, remember) try removing the key from its underlying button. do all this while the laptop is off.. then take a can of wd 40 and spray it on and around the same open button.
put the key back on the button and wait for some time. 5-7 minutes and then restart. if u dont hear the beep this time round its done.. remember to post ur feedback. and CAREFULLY

Ok so it happens with both the keyboards. One is the laptop keyboard and the other one is...ps2 type?

Does it happen with the USB keyboard?

Which OS does you lappy have?
Did you notice this problem after you have installed any new software or any hardware?
Is the antivirus up to date in your lappy?

Hi Frank and Sankar,

I have removed the dot key by prying it using a plucker, then tried to blow air - Did not work. Now,after removing the original laptop keyboard connection , the problem seems to have disappeared (no re occurrence for three hours). Now,using an external usb keyboard, which seems to be working fine.

Os is windows xp. Problem arose one fine morning. I still don't remember if it arose after a new installation. I am not tech savvy at all.

Anti virus is Kaspersky and up to date.

Cheers

wolg

will keep you updated if the "dot key ghost" comes back tomorrow and if the beep sound is still there.

Glad to hear that worked.

Now that the laptop keyboard is unplugged and out of your laptop - give it to someone and tell them that the "." key is stuck.
Any basic electrical person might be able to open it up and check whats causing the contact to be stuck.

Hi Guys,

The laptop seems to have been cured. No beeps today, till now while starting up.

@ Akeel - Maybe its a key stuck. Now that the usb keyboard is working fine, i am ok with the working. It has now become a desktop.

@ Rehaan - The laptop keybard has been disconnected, but still in the laptop. The usb keyboard, I use sits on the laptop keyboard and is of the exact same size, so i feel no difference. I had taken it to three guys. All of them advised changing the original keyboard. Nobody is interested in doing only repairing. You know how people try to make money. Anyways, I will be buying a new laptop so this problem seems to be sorted for now. Maybe, I will find a guy and get it repaired. Thanks for your help.

Thanks to all for their suggestions and help.
