Does not crash. ;-) But a real memory hog. 512 MB ram is insufficient to run two users each running FireFox + Openoffice.org + pidgin + kde4. Hard disks start to thrash around (swap access/?) But processor usage is very low < 30%.

The interface looks and feels strange, but newbies to a computer will find it easy to work with.

RIght now, I am installing KDE4 on a production server - from Debian experimental!!!

I can see a Gnome friend around. KDE 4.0 was always released as a stable for developer and enthusiast edition and wasn't tauted to be used by end users and production environments. Hence no point in bringing up a Gnome vs KDE and QT vs GTK discussion here.

I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 Interpid Ibex yesterday and soon realised that 9.04 was already released. So I upgraded to 9.04 over the night and now I'm using it. I earlier used an older version on Ubuntu. The only problem was connecting to the net. Now I've figured that out and I'm all set to chuck Windows out of the Window. This is my first post on T-BHP using Ubuntu. Let's start a new thread for version 9.04.

What happened to that thread?

Anyway, downloaded and made a bootable disc and now, after 10 minutes, I am online using Ubuntu running on my laptop! (Live CD)

The installation was a breeze and connecting to the network (wireless) was even easier!

Thinking of installing this on my desktop, which is currently out of commission due to various issues (software related) and slowness (been using the current XP installation for the last 4 years, hence the condition!). Seems like I have a Linux distro I am going to enjoy using.

I am an avid linux lover. My phones run linux too. But my laptop is a toughie with broadcom 4306. But my new laptop will be a No-OS OEM with Linux. Mostly Linux Mint but may go with another flavour of Debian.

I am still looking for the one with the right hardware.

Man, what a product! I have tried several times to get XP & Windows 7 installed in my Toshiba Dynabook. Windows 7 never for installed. XP got installed but had issues with drivers and sound or display not working.

I just tried the live CD. 4-5min I was online with multimedia, display all working. Great product. I love it.

Unbuntu right on my windows desktop

How many of you have tried the seamless mode with Virtuabox? Its cool, lets me see windows and taskbar from my virtual OS Ubuntu right on my windows desktop and not in a separate window like what you see in remote desktop connections or with Virual PC.

Here's a screenshot which shows Windows start menu, Ubtuntu start menu, a terminal window, and GIMP running all in the same desktop!!

The Ubuntu Linux Thread-seamlessmode.png

Now I can process images in GIMP that too without switching to the virtual OS's window. Just need to drag and drop files to be processed in the shared folder and open it from GIMP which is on my windows desktop itself.

Clevermax, Microsoft Windows' version of GIMP is available. And you can mount ntfs partitions in Ubuntu using ntfs-3g. There is really no need to run virtualisation merely for photo editing.

But yes, drag and drop over visualised environment may be a very convenient feature.
