There are specialized applications on every platform, so that's fine. BTW, couple of clients that I work with are Linux only clients (use Linux for development/deployment).

Actually a good bunch of folks! I know many in-person, who use Open Office. (I don't like it though).

Advt and Banners suck big time in Chrome. No "adblock" for Chrome. So, Firefox it is.

People who have not bought MS Office? I have Office 2000; I can tell you that I never intend to spend any more money on this kind of software, so, when and if the time comes, it will be Open Office for me.

I doubt that I'd ever miss Word: I have hated it for one thing or another on quite a lot of the many days I have used it! From a quick glance at Open Office, though, I would miss Excel --- one very decent piece of software from MS.

What's that I hear? MS did not develop Excel, they bought it? Hmmm... I guess it shows

Now, about browsers and security issues: I'd better double check that my Firefox is up to date. Whatever browser you use, keep it up to date!

OO.o has the "calc" which is a spreadsheet.

If you find that inadequate, you always have gnumeric. I do quite a few spread sheet work in both.

And couple of days back, I had to work on a system running windowsxp. I had to spend half an hour figuring it out; (security issues, firewalls, etc.) Set up all to maximum, and then finally decided to install Firefox on it.

And in spite of that I was getting "popups" from the taskbar - with sleazy photos. The bottom line - no browser is securer than the underlying OS.

BTW, I was using a M$ product after 8 years!!!

Open office

Open office suite is a real good alternative to MS office, needs a bit o' polishing though. The features array is vast, with all the essentialities missing in MS office being bundled into one tight package. I have completely uninstalled MS office from my system, and now a hard core Open office user. It even comes with a PDF export option, which Adobe and microsoft are providing as separate products.

I said "from the taskbar". It was not FF which was giving the popups. Probably some program was running, which did not show up in the taskbar. The area near right hand bottom of the screen, where time is displayed.

Haha. Dont even think of stopping FF.

I think that machine had a "history". The guy who regularly uses it was a bit uncomfortable giving me the system. He was saying some "virus" something. Which is why I downloaded and installed FF first. And when he really had no choice - I had to spend the night in that office that particular day, and first thing I am asked next day is a "how was it" with a rather red face. I said I had no time to use the internet, all I did was to spend around 5 minutes to visit mozilla home page. ;-) He might have believed me because IE's history did not show anything except the FF download.

And after getting the "popups", I did a "forensic run" on the machine. With some shocking err... scandalous results. ;-)

I know many people who don't. They don't buy pirated software and think that MS office is not worth spending a lot of money on so they use open office which has all the functionality that most users need for day to day word processing requirements.

Another thread turning into IE/MS bashing / Hail Linux. Didn't we do enough of that in the Browser thread anyway? Anyway, those who are still using IE, please install the patches using Windows update or download it using the following link

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-078 - Critical: Security Update for Internet Explorer (960714)

Thanks, Gentlemen. Have a great day.

infact microsoft help themself grow by leeching 3rd world countries with their license diplomacy.hence the Linux question arises and also Free Software along with.it is not M$haft bashing -but it is brainwashed indian human species which supports M$ products because they cant think anything better than that!how pity!
Linux is not a kid's game as some so called M$haft based IT professionals envisage.infact GNU/Linux is the *stablest* ,I repeat most stable OS when compared to solaris ,apple os x ,M$ window$ thingies(obviously!) .only competitor for GNU/Linux in reliability is openbsd and freebsd which ofcourse needs experts.

Think about it!dont feel shocked if I shattered the so called dream utopia that anything comes from M$ needs praise!infact M$ is bashing and trying its best to kill open source and Linux(search for so called patent sh1t).
