Using Airtel 512kbps with a phone plus areawide intercom (non charged unlimited calls @ 100 per month for intercom)
Internet is unlimited. Excellent bandwidth speeds. average throughput is in the region of 72-80 kbps.
Its also a phone line which means you need a PAN card/id proof.
cheers

^^^^ Airtel is not best for him. It would cap download speeds after certain amount of data transfer.
i too use the airtel unlimited pack- 384 kbps(sounds a wierd speed right? )... cost 999+tax=1008 approx. installed it in march. i am very very happy with it. get 50-55 kbps constant torrent download speeds. And i am a bigg time downloader, trust me. i have either a pc/ laptop on for 24 hours daily. so go figure. daily download- 1.5gb.. so close to 30gb per month avg?
installation was 500/- for modem ( 1000 for wireless but i was a bit wary about taking wireless at the new place) and they even gave a free phone(never used since we are all a mobile family). I took a lot of time and lot inquiring before going for airtel. And reaaally very happy to have taken airtel.
Anyway since cyrus put this up in dec 08.. i am sure he must have already gotten a connection but hope this helps someone else.
Does Bombay not have many true unlimited plans at decent speeds like rest of the country? When I was in Delhi, I had an Airtel Unlimited Plan - 512 Kbps for Rs. 1700. I beleive irag's friend was using a 2 MBPS unlimited on Airtel for Rs. 2200.
I see Airtel has 512 Kbps plans but they are expensive and they cap the service at 100GB as well.
Anyway, I will be moving to my flat in Veera Desai in Andheri West. Does anyone know how well Tata Communications (VSNL) or Airtel or Tata ADSL or Sify performs. I need a steady 512KBPS connection, unlimited and not too price (~Rs. 1800 Per Month).
Thanks!
Try Hathway. I dont need unlimited stuff but have a 1Mbps with 1gb per month pre paid for six months for 1850/- It's good. I forget what they were quoting for unlimited. But try them. Professional and responsive.

When i had hathway(512) before MTNL i wasn't too thrilled with the performance. Especially the latency...seemed to be fairly high.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but i dont think (tv) cable internet can match ADSL in mumbai.

What's a good ISP in worli area? Good speed and service. (Not MTNL)
Have only recently head of these guys : Tikona
They seem to be a very recently launched WIMAX supplier. Any reviews ?
Tikona Digital Networks
(I'm not sure i understand the "maximum bill amount", does that mean after you've paid that much its effectively an unlimited plan?)

Well, since you say no to MTNL :
- Tata indicom ADSL
Heres a flyer that was slipped under my door a few days back (kemps corner).
I've heard that speed is good with indicom, and cant remember if their customer service was said to be good or terribly bad.
- Reliance
If you have a laptop and occasionally use it on the move, why not consider the new reliance USB 3mbps whatever its called. Have heard its quite good.

Speed is good with TATA Indicom "
If connection is ADSL". Most of TATA Indicom connections are from cable operators and that means pathetic customer service and uptime.
In Worli, availability of internet depends on society / building.
In order of preference, options are :
- Reliance/Airtel/TATA Indicom (ADSL)
- MTNL
- Reliance WiMax
- Reliance/TATA USB Sticks
Quality of connection from Reliance/TATA/Airtel is pretty good as long as connection is through ADSL.
Tikona: "Contention Ratio - 1:30 for unlimited & High Speed Internet Plans; 1:10 for Circuit Breaker Plans"
Aaaargh! Most people are likely to miss this fine print and wonder why pages don't load that fast. Sharp policy at best.
@NetfreakBombay: any idea what is the contention ratio of the other service providers? I remember VSNL used to be 1:4 on business connections.
Cyrus,
I work in an IT firm where every sales/field guy has a Laptop. My office is divided between Tata Indicom and Reliance 3.1 Gbps, high speed modems which connect using the USB port. These two are current options approved by my company for purchase under the co's special plan.
I download MBs of data in no time, typically 650Meg movie is downloaded in 1hr 40 min flat.
IMO, the trouble with such (b)leading edge technology is that the saturation point comes quickly.
In addition to the atractive plans, the other advantge in your case might be mobility, i.e if you need it.
Also do check out MTNL 3G spectrun plans for High Speed Data Access, it is a safer bet in my opinion as their spectrum will never get choked.

No idea about actual ratios. This is an study that calculated actual ratios for BSNL and Airtel.

As per this, at 11:00 AM IST international bandwidth becomes the choke point. And ALL users (business/residential) suffer.

I have my doubts on this company. I was keen on this and called them yesterday, asked the helpdesk rep for tariff info he replied that the area sales chap will get in touch. I told them thats all well and good but i would like to know the pricing in general as I need to decide now itself or else i will go to another ISP. They rep replied "ok then please go to another place" :Shockked: Asked for his name and he banged the phone down.
Sent a stinker email to the company, they called to apologize, told them I am not interested to deal with a company of this sort they convinced me to speak with the ASM who will call me in within 15 mins. It has been 15 hours and no reply. I certainly doubt their credibility !
