Can someone please guide me how can I get the developer preview on the WP 8.1?

Is it poss for anyone to download it? Is it official or something like a custom rom of android?

Does it mess up the warranty?

Hey Harshal, you can check out WP central for details. On was the previous page I have posted the link on how to get the preview, if you read the article you will find the answers to your questions. To get the update you have to install the app and then install 1 update which is necessary than another to prepare your phone(also compulsory), then you can go ahead and install 8.1.
To use Cortana go to region change to US, then in keyboard hold on English US and hit move up.
P.S. the first update is large, the second one small, and the third one obviously large.

Hope you mean "possible" by "poss". Sorry, I do not understand much of SMS lingo.

Yes, this is official from MS.
Anyone can download. Its FREE for everyone who sign-up for Developer Preview (which is FREE again).

Here are the steps:
1. Logon to AppStudio site with your Hotmail/Live account (whichever you used while logging on to your WP)
2. Once you login, Click on YES


3. Choose any unique UserName and accept T&C; Register yourself to Windows Phone App Studio



Done! You are Registered now.

4. Go back to your WP and install Preview for Developers (this link also has further screenshots on how to enable Preview from phone)
5. In the Preview for Developers app, once you accept T&C it will ask you to Sign-In with the registered account (which you registered above)
6. Once done, select "Enable Preview for Developers" and click on Done.

You are all set for receiving WP 8.1

7. Go to Phone Update under Settings in your phone and check for any updates.
8. There will be 2-3 updates and it will take about 30-40 minutes for entire process to complete.

Yes. Again it would depend on your service center. So, you are doing this at your own risk.
With that said, its very unlikely that anything can go wrong.

Else, best option is to wait for the update to be available in India.

Thanks guys. Followed the steps, got the first round of update. Phone restarted and installed the update, and restarted back finally. Now I'm searching for updates and it's been over 5 mins, but the phone is still "checking for updates..."

Checked the phone version - it's still the Black update. Wondering what can be done here (other than waiting )

Edit: A typical Microsoft problem and resolution method. Restarted the phone, and the problem was solved!

I tried updating the OS on my Lumia 820 in the evening tonight. I successfully completed the first two updates. The phone restarted itself twice after the both the updates. However, during the third update, after about 32% download the phone flashed an error code (80072ee2) and started mentioning that the phone is unable to check for updates. Moreover the phone is unable to look for updates inspite of having connected to my home wifi network.

What could be the problem here. How should I proceed further.

I was facing the same problem because of the slow Wi-Fi speed. But as soon as my Wi-Fi got back to hi speed, the download was complete.

Ok. Since you are messing up somewhere I am posting this step-by-step pictorial-
1)Open settings (not posting a picture of this)

2)Tap on 'notifications+actions'


3)You should see this screen


4)Scroll down and tap on WhatsApp


5)You should see the 'notification sound' bar


6)Tap on that bar


7)Scroll up


8)Tap on 'none'

9)Go back

10)Turn off 'show in action center' (if you want to)


11)You are done! Now you won't get a notification for WhatsApp!

Twice in the night I restarted the phone hoping to start the download once again, but inspite of everyhting, it didn't. So, I left the phone with wifi on the whole night and slept off. In the morning today the first thing I did on waking up was to check the update if happening, it was not. Then suddenly about two hours later, on its own the phone flashed the update progress and finally over the next one and half hour time it was completed.

Since I was on the move that time, I have not been able to update the calender for want of wifi connection. But on the whole the new update is truly worth the wait.

p.s. Previously we had the freedom to change the network connection between 2G/3G as per our choice, I have now been able to locate this option after the update. I need this option since 3G connection are a big energy drain and I can not keep internet connection turned off all the times.

I went through the procedure again and again before posting the query. The thing is no app I.e Facebook, WhatsApp, viber, etc aren't showing up.

Another query : What is Facebook beta? One of the pic showed Facebook beta.

As someone posted, Facebook isn't working.

The only thing is I am unable to set is quite hours and enable Cortana:(

Cortana not as important but quite hours is. The wpcentral.com link states it's mentioned in the settings page itself but I am unable to see it. Can others please confirm the same.

The new keyboard is simply awesome. Best ever I have used.

Another thing I wanted to ask is can we manage background tasks like we could in WP 8.0 by swipping right from the settings page?

You need to get cortona for quiet hours.

To get cortona,
1) Go to settings
2) Set language to English US
3) Even if you add English US, you might find it second to English India. Move it up
