JVC have a nice new range called 'Everio' that records onto a mini hard-disk (like the one on the iPod) I think the hard disk capacity is 4 gb. Ask your father to get you one from Bahrain.

As far as handycams go JVC is better than Sony. As a matter of fact Sony is slipping on all fronts from televisions (Sharp, Hitachi and the Koreans have stolen a march on it in the Plasma TV market) to music (iPod has eaten its music business, as have the others) and its nowhere among the top Digital camera sellers.

Check it out on the web - it looks pretty nifty too.

Not sure if this will help you, but let me anyway answer you :)

You need to choose what type of handicam you want. As I remember, very broad categories are as given below:

a) Analog VHS handycam : This is big and oldest type of it. It records on a cassette using analog information. Poor quality but cheapest of all.
b) Digital 8 : It is better than VHS, but old technology. Still many people buy "Digital 8" cameras, because they are cheaper than higher variants. Can be interfaced with a computer.
c,d) Mini DV and Micro DV : Most compact versions and advanced technologies, but again most expensive ones.

I suggest, you go ahead with Sony in India simply because there is good support available. JVC and Panasonic are good too, but the support is just not as good.

Choose from the types mentioned above, based on your requirements. If you plan to burn VCDs from your cassettes on home PC, make sure you also buy IEEE 1394/Firewire card for your computer.

More knowledgeable people on the forum can guide you further.

JVC!!..umm, i thought sony, samsung and panasonic were the best among handycams

but anyway will check tht out, tho' it sounds to be outta the budget

even sharp is good and cheap . i have one and it is dirt cheap in us

And yes, I have a JVC MiniDV myself. It comes packed with so many features, but it has perenial problems interfacing with Windows. Sometimes, it works out of box and on other days, it just does not work, no matter what! I did extensive research to make mine work with my home PC, but it is still whimsical. It works fantastically with my BIL's laptop however, so I am not complaining.

In case you are decide to buy a Sony, make sure you buy one with Carl Zeiss lense.

Sony TRV 228

Sony TRV 238

Sony TRV 285

the first two cost under 20k showroom price and the third one is 23k. all of them are almost the same i guees, just minor differences..right now i've got my mind set on the 3rd one..makin max use of the budget ;)

and why is the remote for..its a remote right???

RX...all of them have Carl Zeiss lense.

All are MiniDV with Carl Zeiss lense, I suppose.

Buy a more expensive camera only if you are going to use all the features. People often buy camera with 100 nice features and finally just make use of 1. That's "Aim and shoot" :-)

I would suggest 3 parameters:

Technology :from a tech sense.. i guess the bare min that u shud go in for now is a Mini DV.. all the other technologies are out dated...

Zoom :You also need to get a hang on where is it that you r gonna be shooting the most i.e indoors or outdoors... if its outdoors, then the optical zoom will matter to.. dont get too carried away by digital zoom.. doesnt help

Mega pixels: this is with specific reference to the still camera feature which helps u take digital pics...

most models these days come with a memory stick slot i guess...

the sony web site has a comparison across models... that shud help..

cheers

vivaid..which is that website?? i prefer a cam with a memort stick/card. and a one with good optical zoom(hows the digital zoom on handycams?). well features wouldn't come into play much, but i thin the more u pay, the better cam u get

Karthik247,

I got my handycam from J.J.Mehta, here in Mumbai. The model I got is CCD-TRV-460E. It is a Digital8 with 20x optical zoom and 990x digital zoom. Video quality is pretty decent, but transferring what's on tape to your PC or CD is not easy. It has a memory card slot and still picture quality is OK. The models you shortlisted are even older models. I got mine for about 22k back in October 2004. If you come to Mumbai, pay a visit to J.J.Mehta. You could probably pickup a Panasonic MiniDV model for as low as 25k!

Cheers!
