Need help in procuring a 4x Graphics card

Hi I need help in buying new (or in good working condition a used one) 4x graphics card with either 256 / 512 MB memory. My motherboard (Asus A7V8X) does not support the newer 8x cards. I've tried in vain all the PC vendors here. Would be grateful if anyone could help me on this.

have you actually tried an 8x AGP card ? usually they are backward compatible

EDIT: the board is supposed to be 8x compatible, Have you tried a Bios update?

Greenhorn 8x cards are backward compatible no doubt, but the issue is the kind of slot on my board. Uploading pics of both types of cards and the slot on my motherboard for reference.

I still dont see why an 8x card wont fit on your board. It supports 8x, and the slots and the fingers match. You seem to have confused the speeds with the AGP specifications. your board ( the A7V8X) supports 8X! .Most of the 8x cards currently available have keys in both the slots, and are fully backward compatible!

AGP compatibility for sticklers

If you are curious about the compatiblity

PS: Here's the card that you've shown as a 4x is actually an 8x/4x card as well

The distance of the 'cuts' on the card I presume are an issue. I've physically tried to fix a 8x card that has 3 'cuts' onto my board, but it would not slot in. Besides I'd bought this board in 2000 so it's quite an ancient thing by technology standards.

Then I think it must be another older board. The A7V8X did not exist in 2000

Card would not cost less then 2k.

You can as well spend 500 more and get a newer ASUS motherboard that has better onboard grafix then most 4X card would have.

E.g. : M2N MX - SE + NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430 Chipset

This costs 2.5k and comes with decent onboard graffix card.

My bad, I mixed up the design architecture for 4x and 8x in the pics I posted. Here are pics of my existing board and the display card / slot.

Paccha horn cheta I had bought it in 2000 for sure through RP Tech.
And it's an AMD processor I'm running on it,maybe they didn't have it for Intel back then (AMD is always ahead of Intel )

netfreak I'm fine with about 2.5K for the graphic card. But unable to find one locally.

white one is PCI bus other (brown one) is agp.

so you basically need an AGP card. i presume its an AMD athlon XP mobo.
Whats your usage.? as AGP card will not handle any newer games (above dx8), if that thats your main aim.

If your graphics is burned and you need to use this system instead of shelling it out. i have a riva tnt. can send you for free.

SirAlec I currently am running a Riva TNT 64MB card on my system. Bought a BenQ E900HD last month. The existing card makes my screen have a wavy effect (currently running at 1366x768). I was told a higher spec card will fix things hence this entire excercise.

I still cant believe that you bought it back in 2000. But If you are sure , I cant call you a liar

Are you sure you bought this particular board in 2000? or did you get this board when you RMA'd the board you bought in 2000 or something like that? The asus site lists this card from 2002 onwards.

I cant understand why you cant use that card in that slot. maybe that particular card has issues being installed in there?

I'm confused. I give up

I've tried 2 diffrent 8x cards on it and both dint fit in. Since you sound so convinced I've asked the guy who brought it along last time to give it to me again this evening. Will keep you posted.

I think this has something to do with AGP and AGP pro slots, the card looks like to me a AGP pro one, then again there are 5v(very old) and 3.3v slots

The boards A7N8X and A7V8X came in 2002 AFAIR, coz i bought the A7N8X Deluxe as soon as it was out.

EDIT: also try to test the card on the board before buying, coz few 6 series nvidia cards doesn't work on that board. i will suggest a AGP 5200 for 1000 bucks if you aren't going to do any gaming and stuff
