In Bangalore I generally buy computer items from following shop Computer Warehouse Online - Buy Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Accessories, Laptops and Electronics

You can see pricelist of different parts in website for reference and also you can download price list in excel format from top right corner of home page. They sell reliable items and with warranty and bill. No grey market funda here.

External USB DVD Writer starts from 2750 Rs.

Edit: Internal DVD Writer for Laptop is Rs. 2400. In Excel File see row number 272

Ok. how about SATA DVD writer in an external casing.. Anybody tried that route. This looks to be the cheapest option, and the most reliable too.

me not a fan of those local ( enter , tech com etc) casings. A friend of mine bought one of those for a hard disk and it would refuse to work in USB 2.0 mode with certain PC's. so get something branded.

They are a bit bulky. almost as much as a small netbook. you sure you going to carry it around ?

Whats the power requirement for these casings.. I guess around 50W?

Did you buy one from the laptopnrepair guys or shree computer? What about drivers etc., is it recognized as a generic device? Thats important because I will be using it under Linux
No sata to usb and ide to usb casing are both available for DVD.

No i visited only once to shree laptop repair, didn't like their attitude.
they quoted ridiculous 15k for the mobo for my AMD based compaq.

I got from the repair guys, he also keeps laptop stuff.

It depends on what you need.

If you want to install new dvdr on the lappy visit the repair guy.

if you want external solution vist NP and shop.

BTW SVB will not sell you directly.

some help needed...

I have a DELL Vostro 1200 Laptop since 2008. And for such a long time since 2005 or some thing, I am stuck with Nero 6 for CD/DVD Burning. I have found it easy to use and did not bother to check out any thing new.

Nero Version:

Size: 32.1 KB

Past 2 weeks or so, I am having problems Burning data to a DVD. I see that the whole process is complete and then finally Nero throws an error. Pasted below.

Laptop DVD write kaput - Repair cost?-error-dvd-write.jpg

Any thoughts on what this is?

Should I suspect the drive itself to be a problem? Or Should it be a driver issue? While, I don't have problems reading data from the Drive. All of my dvd's play alright.

Any other Free Burning software's that I can try or you folks use/recommend?

Cheers,
Jai

If you are a DIY you can buy a external casing from company like ENTER and SVB for Rs.450 and a DVR writer for 1000. Its bulky though with all those supply.

BTW i bought one made by Enter USB (without supply) from the same person mentoned above for Rs.2450.
Dear tsk what Sir Alec said is correct. Even I have a Laptop with internal DVD Writer which is 4x which is slow. So I brought a LG DVD Writer for 1,000 (OEM Unit, without the external cartoon box) and external casing for Rs.600. It is slightly bulky. It comes with 240 V power cable. It comes with SATA / USB Interface.

tsk,

My Dell Inspiron 5160 is way older 6+ years but superb in terms of speed and working with multiple apps. My DVD Drive went kaput. Got another one fitted for 2.5K a few months back.

In fact I had a DVD/CD Writer Combo and got a DVD Writer this time. I got it from SP road in Bangy. What I'm saying is there are compatible drive for most of the laptops , new gen or old gen. Why get an external one when you can have an internal drive?

Indy
