Thanks iceman & Bigron

LOL I know they go very high, what I wanted to know was at what price do they start :-)

Ok a newbie Question - Are the floor speakers anyday better than the satellite/bookshelf ones?

depends on what sort of music you like. For trance/jazz with lots of bass, yes.

for classicals/vocal music, a pair of bookshelves is better.

Alternately, a pair of bookshelves with a good sub will sound as good or better

The ones which are around 3-4 feet tall.
12K will get you a basic 6" 2 way tower. For 18K you can get a basic 2 x 6" 2.5 way tower. Obviously the sky is the limit.

Thanks guys, will definitely look at the Bookshelf speakers. Don't really want to go the sony, phillips way for sure.

Question- If a speaker's impedance is 4 ohms can it be used with an amp which has an impedance of 8 ohms?

yes, a pair of floorstanders with a sub will be enough and more. But then one will need to have a very good sub that can go very low, else a lot of the spectrum will be redundant - since the towers will be playing pretty low ( about the same range as an 8" sub) , so you'll need a sub which goes much lower, else save until you can get a better sub

NO! if the amp is not rated to drive loads of 4 ohm. the converse can be done though

Thanks guys for quite a few suggestions. Will definitely evaluate the options.

Guess the Norge bookshelves are rules out. Their impedance is 4 ohms while the yam's imp is 8

of course, as long as you dont turn the power Way too high, and the impedance of the floorstanders is greater than or equal to the impedance of the existing speakers

Techno, the problem that you would be facing is about speaker sensitivity.

These higher end speakers are usually less sensitive than sony/philips stuff.
Lower sensitivity means lower sound volume produced. Which means you will turn up the volume knob on the amp.

Now here is the caveat - sony/philips amp are not very powerful. Their RMS power at both channels operating simulatneously with less than 1% harmonic distortion across the frequency spectrum would be very less.

So turning up the volume will only produce more distortion.

Anyway you can still try.

You amp / receiver is usually rated at 8 Ohms impedance. But that doesn't mean it can drive a 4 ohm speaker. The only problem faced will be large current drawn by the speaker - which will lead to faster heating.

-x-

Floorstanders/towers are better than bookshelves if you want extended bass.
Second is that most manufacturers usually market towers as "more premium" product - hence they get better drivers - which ultimately leads to better sound quality. But there are many many exception to this.

Bookshelves are pretty good, and if you feel the bass lacking, then add a subwoofer.

Hmm thanks for all the info guys & thanks pranav for starting such a nice thread (Sorry pranava99 for hijacking your thread )

If I go for proper floor speakers I will only power them with a separate amp. I just wanted to know which one would count as an upgrade from my current HIfi system & since those speakers are quite close to book shelf speakers, I am under impression that upgrading to shelf speakers wont be as good as upgrading to floor speakers.

I bought a pair of floorstanders, and used my dad's ye olde 1978 panasonic minicompo with 12+12W RMS output to drive them. It did the job remarkably well

Oh no no!
Since I can see you are in Pune, check out one Silo Media & Solutions at Mittal Court.
They have hi-fi amp + speakers ready. (There are many other shops also)

Check it for once, and you will forget everything else. And you will also realise that high end bookshelves are not to be shrugged off like that.
