How do you value a domain name ?

How would you go about putting a value on a domain name.

e.g. patel.org , singh.org

They are unique, i know the S1NGH number plate was being advertised for in excess of £100,000 in the UK. A domain name is worldwide whereas a number plate is limited to the country of issue.

There are various companies that value your domain name for a fee. Just search for "domain appraisal" in your favourite search engine. Armed with their valuation report, you would be able to bargain better with the buyer.

Most such companies would not be able to value domains with "India Specific" Keywords. So this is indeed a tough call.

Thanks guys, I tried a few appraisal companies and they valuations systems are pretty lame. e.g. I could ask them to appraise mirch.org or kutha.org and it will give similar valuation to patel.org. Its quite obvious that with the millions of Patels the demand for Patel should be greater unless your name is Snoop Dog and you want the kutha domain.

I have someone wanting to buy a domain I registered in the early days of the net but got no way of putting a fair market value on the domain.

I had listed mine at sedo just to check the value. I lost my registration fee and not a single enquiry came over 2 years. They have auctions and similar selling methods almost every week. But you have to pay more for such things.

You can try posting your domain name at Domain Appraisals - Indian Domain Names Forum and check what those folks have to say
