Wondering if there are any concrete measures to actually calculate Internet use?
Usually we end up blindly paying the bill. We tend to get a very unrealistic usage chart in the case of BSNL, however, How far is this actual?

Are there any means to check?

I use netlimiter. A lot of other utilities exist

Who is service provider? Most of them provide online usage tool. If you want to measure it on your/client side , you might have to use third party tools like du meter etc. However it is bit dificult as a format inbetween or if forgot start du meter in couple of instances, your figures will go for toss.

Du Meter is very good. You can set custom limit in it and it will notify you as soon as you are about to reach that limit.

I decline to agree here. BSNL usage report on your portal page is very comprehensive. you can export to excel sheet. and see for your self.

start of connection, end of connection, day, date time, download/upload data. and even duration in hrs and mins..

It can never be so comprehensive than this.

If you are not in an unlimited plan better turn off the windows update first. install a firewall so you have a control.

? Just remembered a funny incident way back in the dial up days. yes you use your telephone line to call a number the provider has listed and connect with your MODEM. At the most you might get about 30 odd K. Used to try out a lot of service providers and once bought the VSNL pack, dialed the provided number and hear ( on the modem buzzer ) a dude pick up the phoneline and say hello! . And ofcourse there are newbies who hack the phone lines and used to let your phone bills run high! All I would suggest is if you have an unlimited useage option, get it. Atleast then you know how much you will spend.

I love it.

It also has a realtime speed graph (semi-opaque & with click-through), ping, traceroute, netstats, taskbar graph etc

AND it doesn't require any installation!

I don't use this usage stats feature, but heres a screenshot anyway....


PS - Oh, it can even add up all data from computers on your network running the program!
