Its good you ditched Toshiba for 1014. Not worth the effort and expense. No offence to Toshiba owners.

i thought from my post, i gave you an impression that you are doing a mistake by buying from India rather than USA. So i was just saying its better to buy from local vendor. I would curb the temptation by having a party for the peace of mind you get from buying locally.

Well, i had some pretty bad experience around Toshiba laptops. Especially entry level and mid budget ones. So didn't dare to try the high range ones. Also for what one pays for Toshiba, we can get better/same config in dell which has superior support.

Some of the major issues i have seen with Toshiba laptops - battery conking off, uncomfortable keyboard, weird placement of keys, bulky, unreliable service, harrowing customer care experience, offers mail in service rather than next-business day on site repair, performance is a wee bit less than what competitors offer LCD screens loses color over a period of time. The last one could be due to more brightness or customer's negligence, but haven't seen the same from dell, hp, sony, asus and acer.

If you are buying Dell, its better to buy from US. Dell's warranty can be transferred to India free of cost and you get a hefty config + 3 years warranty for $ 1k.

Are you sure its transferable? The customer support told NO, its not possible. Also when you buy, there is a checkbox where it says can't be used outside Canada and USA and warranty is non-transferable

Please throw some light since i just bought 1014, i would like to avail of this service if possible.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

It is mostly automated, just fill this form:

Dell - International Ownership Transfer Form

And fill Address/Contact details for India.

Oh I missed that part. Maybe this is some specific deal where they have put these restrictions and reduced price.

Usual purchases should not have these restrictions.

How much?

Asus India has the VX6, but I can't find any prices in India for it.

Qosmio's here

So finally I got the X505-Q892 Qosmio delivered.
The 893 came on lightning deals for 899$, but then, no use crying over split milk!
Its a beast
18.4" screen, 10lbs, i5-460M and the top end Nvidia 460M.
Heck, even the lower specked Alienware with 285M etc, costs 1500$

So far I have just played Halo 2 at full detail, and this baby does not even break a sweat. I guess crysis will be the real torture test!

Finally a laptop with a decent graphics card !! I've been lookout for one for long.

Some questions

1. What other models did you consider ? The laptop I'm looking for has to have a powerful card like this one, but with a smaller screen. The new Dell XPS 15 is almost ideal for me, except for its card which is 435M.

2. I noticed you're living in Delhi, but apparently, you've bought your laptop from some American/international retailer. Do they ship internationally (to India) ? If yes, then may I ask how much did you pay for customs/shipping ?

Thanks for answering.

Have the same questions as Anku. Total price in Rupees as well, please!

@Anku

You can look at the Y560 Ideapad from Lenovo. The ATI 5650 HD is able to handle most games without an issue.

anku94,

It seems tsk1979 is travelling and picked up the Qusimo someplace abroad. Look closely at the background in the photograph, the blinds and the heat plumbing are dead give aways.

1. I was considering Asus G72/G53 series, as well as MSI GX740/640 but all models with 5870 card(equivalent to this card in ATI land) were 1299 or more. There was one model which was for 1099$ in MSI, 15.6". But since I wanted 17" or bigger, only model in my budget was the 5850 equipped 279US, and that too with the small 320GB HDD.
As for Dell XPS, the 435M is not a gaming card by any standards. Buy a laptop with 5650 or 5730. You should find acer/HP with those cards for 45K or less. They cost around 600-700$ in the US

Thanks. I'll add that to the list.

Although I'll be buying one in mid-2011, but it's my first upgrade since 2004, hence the prior research.

If I land in some good engineering college, I'll have a bigger budget than 45k.

I just found out buying from Amazon is a good option. They have good deals on those Asus ROG series as well. The only thumbs down is the 17" screen which means less battery life and portability.

Thanks for the advice.
