Never knew you could get a lappy like this for such a price in India. Where do you place an order ? And do you know the price of GX660 ?

Oh ! I'll give them a call, I guess. Thanks for the info.

BTW, have you considered Sager laptops ? Check out the NP8130. Highly VFM. And non-flashy. And the cases are supposed to be rock-solid.

They are not available in India. It is true though that at one point when PCtorque and Sager were one, they had the might to take on the likes of Alienware and Voodoo. Excellent service.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I am confused. Hopelessly.

Guys. Sorry that I have not introduced myself. I am barath and right now i am in the process of finalising a laptop for my use. So now you know the reason behind the first line.

I have to replace my ageing workhorse my dell inspiron 5160 (bought in Jan 2005).

My needs are

1. Fast laptop
2. Not much movies
3. Not much games (Possibly NFS Hot pursuit. They say its amazing)
4. excel work
5. Importantly CATIA and Ideas and excel
6. Will not replace it for nrxt 6 years atleast.
7. have a good ear phone and i am not an audiophile. so speaker quality doesnt matter

So it should be able to cope up with my 3D modeling requirements.

Budget: $1000(going to get it from US)

Finalised on
Sony VAIO F series (16.4" screen, Core i7-740, 6gb ram, 1 gb nvidia, 320 gb hard disc and separate numeric keyboard) for $1050

Now here comes the first confusion
Dell xps 15 (15.6" screen, i7 2720, 4gb ram, 500 gb hard disc, 1gb nvidia, regular keyboard and jbl speakers) for $1100
Though i dont need speakers, dell is offering second generation i7 processors and lesser ram while sony has 1st gen processor and higher ram. Also sony has numeric key pad which is useful for excel work.

Upgrading ram in dell pushed up the price by another $60. I have already exceeded the budget. I dont want to exceed it further. So what to do stck to sony or switch to vaio??

Now comes the hopeless confusion.

read in laptopmag.com that the speed of F series is slower than dell xps. Thats fine with me. They have given an PCmark vantage score of 6600 approx for sony and 6900 for dell (dont know what the hell that means0. But lenovo think pad t410s with i5 processor, 4gb ram, 512mb nvidia and an 128gb ssd is getting a score of 11300. It also can support huge multitasking at a time like playing 1080p movie, some war game and browsing at a time without fuss.
How is that possible? Except for ssd i have better processor, higher ram (i think the graphics card has a better processor compared to sony or dell - which by the way are same)

Now all you experts please advise me how to proceed. I believe that i3 and i5 are almost same in the number of cores and number of threads. But i7 has more number of threads and cores. i have time till march end. by that time i have to finalise on my new baby.

thanks in advance

Err..was PCTorque not always a Sager reseller ?

And I was talking about importing it, there are many people who'll do it for you, if you don't have a friend visiting US. NP8130's base price + Rs. 15000 (customs + shipping) works out to be somewhere around 71k. For that, you get 460M and i7 Sandy bridge.

AH! I see they have begun again. PCTorque has been so prominent with Sager that at one point they were considered to be one. They had stopped selling a couple of years ago.

PCTorque also used to ship internationally before. BTW, you can get the same laptop in India too. These are mostly Clevo Compal MSI Quanta Uniwill or other OEM models rebadged. You will find a lot of articles on the same.

Other Sager resellers also ship internationally. The downside is that they charge somewhere around $340 for shipping, plus taxes. One guy I talked to estimated a shipping of 6.5k-7.5k INR, and he said that he'll handle customs, and will be able to get me lower customs.

Oh, can you give me more details on this ? The only Sager reseller I found in India was http://www.connoiseur.com/ and they are still selling Core 2 Duos for 1 lac + . Googling didn't help either.

There's a thread 'iBhp : Team BHPians on a mac'. You'll find plenty of Mac users there.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Bought the Dell Inspiron 15R, 37k all incl... core i3-380M, 320 GB HDD, 3GB RAM, 512MB ATI card. I have taken the 2yr complete cover within the specified price. The sales rep told me that the delivery time will be approx 8 business days... I have no clue about how accurate the delivery is, any inputs? Also, I have been told that the complete accidental cover would mean that if there is a breakage which is irrepairable then I would be replaced with a brand new laptop, does that happen in real world (i mean the complete cover like the way they mention)!!!

Yes it covers most things except battery. Battery is covered only for first 6 months.
