Re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Got an excellent deal on the new Apple MacBook MK4N2HN/A 12-inch Retina Display Laptop (Intel Core M 1.2ghz/8GB ram/512GB/Intel HD Graphics 5300), Gold color which has an MRP of 1.29 lakhs. Got it on Amazon for 95k! This price is way cheaper than even the USA pricing.

I am looking to get the 21inch iMac Retina display version but can't find a good deal online. The laptops seem to have better deals.

2. iMac 21.5" 4K

Regards,
Didn't know that there was so much of a price difference between the highest spec 21" iMac and the lowest end 27".

But, still I would say do not even think about a Mac with a 5400rpm Hard Disk. It would make the computer unusable.

Congrats, it's a wonderful machine I have picked one with 256 Gb last year at around 80ish after discount from a local reseller - if you haggle a bit you can expect 12-15 % discounts on almost all Mac products including retina 21inch.

Do take apple care on this machine and also ensure nothing comes between screen and the hinges / main body - black strip on which MacBook is written is of Glass - mine got cracked due to a small piece of mouth freshener( coated sauf) that got struck while closing the screen - it is a very delicate piece but fast, perhaps due to 8Gb RAM and the overall OS , only time i look for my 15 inch pro is when I have to type something long.

You probably would never use I never missed Windows in 3 years of usage. Although I did buy Office for Mac when I bought the Mac.

Have you considered a MacMini (since you are contemplating on iMac) ? I own the base MBP 13 inch, 128 GB is quite enough. USB speeds are lightning fast, so I mostly backup on external and almost never store locally. Only thing with Macs is repairs are prohibitively expensive, so get Apple Care (which should take care of the first 3 years). But are pretty abuse friendly (my MBP has been dropped at least half a dozen times in its lifetime).

Hi, a few questions to ask about your requirement:
What size screen? What resolution screen, HD or Full HD? Max acceptable weight?

The main factor that raises cost is the screen resolution. There are many good lightweight (under 2kg, around 1.6kg for 13in screen) under INR50k, but thet only come with regular HD screen

Look at the Lenovo U series.
http://shopap.lenovo.com/in/en/lapto.../u-series/u41/ for FHD screen models.

For me personally, I want around 1.3kg laptop and something that would last for 4-5 years.
Cheapest is Asus UX305 range, then prices go much higher with HP Envy 13 and the finally there are Apple Macbook's.

Hello, my main criteria is 'Multitasking', without any lag.

Opening & working on multiple chrome tabs, along with excel, word, ppt files.
HP Envy 13 is great-very lightweight, but above my current budget.

I am happy with regular HD screen. Can you suggest some models within this budget?

What screen size are you looking at and max acceptable weight?
After that I can give you a list around your budget range.

Multitasking will require a more powerful CPU and loads of RAM if you want reasonable response. Bigger screen also helps else you will waste a lot of time when the screen repaints while switching between application screens.

What would be ideal is a core 7 CPU based laptop. There are a few reasonably priced ones but they last about an hour on the battery.

Many of the above are more than your budget, but that's the best I can find within reason. The rest are way higher as you have seen.
Also prices may vary slightly depending on your local dealers willingness to haggle.

If we were living in USA or had a trusted person to bring over a laptop, then spec to price ratio would have been much higher

I enjoy a little bit of gaming once in a while sir. My favorite games are there on steam for mac, but put windows in just in case. Anyway the superfast ssd lets me switch operating systems in a minute.

- Processing:
I will not be playing games, but will be using for development with Visual Studio, Android Studio, Open source like Node, MongoDB.
- Budget for new is 50K (max 60K)

I have an option of getting a new one from Singapore as my friend is traveling from Singapore. Dell 13 7000 is looking attractive but may be little costly. But not sure if that will be good for my type of usage.

Also, i am open for used one with good condition. Came across a listing in ebay. Are they reliable ones, any experience?

My office laptop is replaced with new one (ThinkPad T450). Instead of buying a separate laptop for personal use, as a stop gap measure, i have got widows installed in USB drive (SanDisk Extreme 500) and using with the office Laptop. Have installed Windows 8.1 and also installed my development tools like Visual Studio 2015, Android SDK, Cordova etc. Applications are much faster to use.

Pros:
1. Very fast compared to the laptop with the normal HDD (boot time < 15 sec, shut down time < 5 sec)
2. Can carry the USB now anywhere and my whole PC setup is available

Cons:
1. I have created 128 GB virtual drive, so limited space (the utilities i have used has some limitation on creating VHD more than this size, even though my USB Drive is 256 GB in size)
2. Not able to do the free windows 10 update. Even though i got the pop-up for update, the update fails with the message saying Windows 10 free update not available for the USB on the go.

Re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hi all,

My Dell Inspiron 3421 just gave up. In spite of trying all the troubleshooting methods, it didn't seem to wake up. Will be taking it to a Dell service center after my exams.

But it seems like I have to get a new laptop, not willing to waste too much money in repairing the Dell.

I will be buying in/after March. Budget is 50K. My uses are in the lines of casual gaming, photo and video editing, programming and learning new programming languages, a LOT of playing around with Linux, experimenting with new open source software, and of course, watching movies and stuff. I want this laptop to last, and serve as a helping hand in the years to come as my current beginner skills get (hopefully) better. Latest technology is appreciated. Will most probably be running a dual boot(Windows 10+Suitable Linux Distro).

Please help!

P. S: Will be getting a Raspberry Pi 2 soon and pretty darn excited about that!
