Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Any suggestions for good laptop around 30k. Primarily to be used by dad for everyday computing with preference to long battery life. I believe core i3 6th gen, 4GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, integrated graphics will be sufficient for the intended purpose.

Acer? HP? Dell? Lenovo? Also 6th gen core i3 vs 7th gen core i3?

Please advise asap as this is an urgent purchase - by evening I have to finalize.

Please check the seller review on Paytm. FYI - One of the fellow bhpians has reported bad experience with buying laptop on Paytm in the online shopping thread

I have personally bought 4 laptops on paytm so far, for my family and friends. I have also bought from the same seller on ebay as the 10% coupon was active while on paytm the cashback was lower. I do not believe there will be any problem. i acknowledge the issue that sandeepmdas had, but so far this particular seller has been good. He also has >800 ratings on paytm and ~1000 ratings on ebay.
Thanks for watching out and giving me a heads up though, appreciate it.

There is nothing special in this laptop. i3, 4 GB, Linux.
You may get similar deals on Amazon, Flipkart from more reliable sellers and more established brands.

Just for an example:

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Please suggest a laptop for general web browsing and Microsoft Office. No games or any graphics intensive work. There might be an occasional HD video to play.

Requirements, in order of priority, are:

1. No lag.
2. Budget ~ 25K.
3. Portable, screen size < 14".
4. HDMI port will be a bonus.
5. Durable.

Thanks.

Not sure if you're still looking but I think the Yoga 300 is one of the better laptops that is moderately priced. It is 31K on amazon so slightly over your budget but if you listed "portability" and "no lag" as part of your criteria and it's hard to do much better for that kind of money.

http://www.amazon.in/Lenovo-Yoga-300...=lenovo+laptop

The main difference in speed, for day to day task is not due to a better processor or more memory but having a faster solid state hard drive. These drives are expensive and only found on higher end models but the Yoga 300 has a hybrid drive which includes an 8GB SSD + 500GB regular hard drive. This one component itself will make a big difference in performance that you will feel everyday.

Apart from that it's a compact size(11.5") and has an HDMI port. The other specs are not so great but should be enough for web browsing / office / occasional videos.

You will find many traditional 14" or 15.6" laptops in your price range but they will all be bulkier and come with spinning disks.

If you can make do with the web based version of office 365 a chromebook would work great.

This is an interesting one.
HP HP Atom - (4 GB/64 GB EMMC Storage/Windows 10 Pro) P5U16AA#ACJ 2 in 1 Laptop (10.1 inch, SIlver, 1.139 kg).
Available for 21K less 1500 right now.
Can add office student for 3-4 thousands.
This will meet your criteria for portability, light weight, screen size and best of all no lag due to 64 GB SSD storage - no spinning hard disk.
please check out .

Regards,
JLS

This may be a non spinning hard disk but its still not a proper ssd. Read/write speeds are still in the hard disk region.

I would suggest looking at any laptop you like in the price of about 25k (you can get i3 in that price) and then swapping out for an SSD (240GB costs about 6k).

After much deliberation, day before yesterday, I took a risk(imo) on ebay and bought a refurbished Thinkpad T420 with 256 GB SSD. I do not trust ebay for big money purchases but the seller has more than 400 reviews, is top rated and scores more than 99%.

This product meets, no, beats my requirements. I strongly believe there is no better professional laptop.

Very good option but I think its something for the future. I am conservative.

This is what I was confused about while considering the netbooks. Thanks for clearing it up.

Do update us with your experience when you start using it. Always wanted to know the state of refurbished market in india.

I was waiting to use it for a few days before posting my initial review.

The laptop was delivered by BlueDart in 3 days since time of placing the order. This is from Delhi to Delhi, so good service from seller on this front.

It was packed in an ebay envelope, then bubble wrapped and then put inside a generic carboard box. The only other thing was the original Lenovo power brick inside the box. Overall, decent packaging but I doubt if it would have survived couriers other than FedEx or BlueDart on long distance delivery.

Cosmetically, it does look used. I mean there are no outright ugly marks or scratches but the black body shell is not really the black that you get on a brand new piece. Also, it is easy to figure that it has been opened for repairs/refurbishment.

I have been using it on and off for the past 10 days. Its my first experience with an SSD and that too with the fantastic specs of i5 and 8 GB RAM. I have never seen windows boot faster. It only has USB 2.0 ports but copying anything to the hard drive from a USB stick is faster than USB 3.0 on my work laptop.

Overall, it is really good value for money if it lasts the distance (4yrs imo).
