It should look good.
It be easy to carry.
14" screen.
Preferable DELL.
Used for internet browsing and Microsoft office. Nothing else.
Any suggestions in the price range of <40K
Have options of getting it from Singapore or USA.
Give me ideas folks.

For the ladies and lightweight requirements, i suggest look at an Ultrabook .
It might come out to be slightly over your budget by about 5k or so.
Dell's inspiron Ultrabook could be a good option of you prefer Dell.
USA will be the best place to buy it from.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

My wife has a 14" Toshiba - main use Facebook and GMail. It was under 40k with i3, etc. I am a great Toshiba fan, so got her one.

I bought an i5 for my daughter about a year ago, that time even cheaper. She uses it a lot - is a lawyer and Prisoners Right Activist. Both were without OS since I got Win7 Pro 64 bit on our site license.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hi,

I am on the lookout for a Mini laptop for my better half. Usage would be Internet, MS Office, Movies, Music in that order.

My budget is between 15 - 20K.
Hoping to have an HDMI slot.
CD/DVD drive is not required.
Processor should be Intel (somehow dont know why but i am averse towards AMD)
Screen Size should be in the 10 inch range.
Speakers and Mic required.
2 USB Slots plus Bluetooth would be required.
Color options are welcome rather than the usual black.

Can the experts suggest me something which is really good. i am looking only at HP / Sony or Dell. I guess HP and Sony more due to the fact that they have more service centers.

Need to make the purchase this weekend. Waiting to hear from you guys.

Thanks.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I have a Vaio with Win 7 Home Premium with 4GB RAM and 320 GB HDD.

With Win 8 out, I'm really curious to try it but there's one thing that's holding me back from upgrading. My laptop has the Sony Factory Restore feature in which, in a matter of minutes, the laptop returns to it's original state.

This is very convenient as I don't have to bother reloading all the drivers and so on if I re-install the OS.

If I upgrade the OS, I think it will completely format the entire HDD (including the partition where the OS Backup is located) and I'm hesitant to do it because if I have to format the laptop later, I'll have to install all drivers etc. all over again.

Any suggestions or work-around?

1. Buy a new HDD and install that. Keep existing HDD as a backup in case you need to revert to Win 7
2. Shrink existing partition and create a new parition to install Win 8
3. For just trying it out, just install VirtualBox and create a VM for installing Windows 8 (This is what I do)

If you just want to try it out, then look towards dual booting.
You will need a separate partition for it. You can create it easily.
The best thing is that your existing windows 7 will be left untouched.

If you like it, then you will be able to weigh in the positives of a newer OS with the easy recovery.

You can also look at third party backup solutions. Most of them are just as good.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Ordered a samsung NP-RV511-A09IN laptop for my wife from flipkart for 27,xxx/- rupees, I am hoping that this will be a good experience.

Specs:
http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/p...511-A09IN-spec

My last laptop was hp dv 6114tx which broke within 1.5 years, it was a impulsive buy for 68,000/- back in 2008, the problems I faced with it made be realize that I should never buy a HP laptop in future.

Thanks! I think I'll do as you are suggesting and try out Win 8. If I like it enough, I'll format the HDD and have just Win 8.

Currently, some critical programs that I need in my Univ aren't yet compatible with Win 8; so will wait until they are.

Looking to purchase Dell Inspiron 15RSE from UK as prices are extremely less compared to here.

Only concern is whether the standard warranty offered can be availed in India in case of any issue. Anyone with any experience on this matter?

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Just bought 2 laptops at the recent black Friday sale at USA. Really surprised at the price difference between similar models in India and USA. I was under the impression that laptop and computer parts prices are pretty much similar in both countries. Was surprised at the savings I managed.

Toshiba L850 i5 3210, 4 GB RAM, win 8, 500 GB HDD all at a shipped cost of $399 seems pretty good to me.

The other one is a high end Lenovo Thinkpad T530 with quad core i7 3720QM, 500 GB 7200 rpm HDD, 1 GB graphics card, 1600x900 led backlit display, 8 GB RAM, backlit keyboard for $1050 shipped. This will be my primary image editing maching running some heavy stuff like LR, Nikon NX etc..

Black friday sale prices cannot be compared at all The price benefit is usually substantial for higher end configurations. For standard configurations, the prices are more or less similar, but the added bonus will be getting additional Win 7/8 OS software (usually bundled in the US, where as in India we get them with DOS only).

Forget Sony's restore system and go for CloneZilla. It will backup your entire hard disk (or a partition) and store it in a file that you can easily move to an external HDD. When restoring, boot via CloneZilla CD, choose the image from the external HDD and say restore. Easy, free, open-source.

By the way, I'm looking for a laptop for basic needs such as browsing and video watching but with a normal laptop profile and came across THIS . The price seems right, but not sure about the CPU. Would it be horribly slow? How about playing 720P HD? Note that I'll be installing Linux on it the moment I get it. And how is Toshiba in terms of service and reliability?

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I have Sony Vaio VGNCR-320E which was purchased from US in 2008.
I think the Battery has gone kaput since it does not give backup.
The Model No. of Battery is VGP-BPS9/S.
Would I be able to source a Genuine Sony Battery for the above laptop in India?
What are other options? Can a Non-Sony but Other Good Brand Battery be used instead or how?
