Other than 1.35V should I consider anything else when narrowing down the RAM? Also, would 8 GB work ok alongside 4 GB or they both have to be the same size for any reason?
Yes! Only things to check are voltage and speed - 800MHz (specified as 1600MHz on most kits).

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hi Friends,

Just wanted some inputs for buying a laptop. Basically I am looking for corei3 with 4GB RAM and 500GB configuration.

I have zeroed on the below two options:

http://www.flipkart.com/hp-compaq-15...MDWZ2GFKAYMNV5

http://www.flipkart.com/hp-compaq-15...c-3e4566246782

The first one is DOS at a price of 25800 after discount and the second one is Windows 8.1 at Rs. 29,800.

For the first option, I can install Ubuntu (I assume it to be free of cost). Further I understand from the reviews from the internet that ubuntu is really doing good in terms of applications and security. Honestly I am not aware of any nitty gritties of these technical items. In case Ubuntu is really not great etc, then I will have to examine the second option wherein I have to spend just Rs.4000 more for 8.1 windows license.

Please advice. Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu is based on Debian. All my home PCs have been running Debian for 14 years. Ubuntu is far more eye candy and user friendly than resy of the non-linux OSes. Go ahead with your eyes open. Check Ubuntu forums for any issues with hardware and chipsets used in that laptop.

Yes. You can download from http://www.ubuntu.com/download

If you are looking to try it for the first time you can boot it from a USB without actually installing it to get a feel.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

I have a 1.5 year old HP Envy 4 touchsmart ultrabook bought from US preinstalled with Windows 8. recently, replaced keyboard at a local computer shop. afterwards, I cannot connect internet. usb/wireless options are not working. checking device manager tab, it showed Wan(Network Monitor), Wan miniport IP, Wan miniport IPV6 all have "Code 31" error. I have tried reinstalling drivers as well as using command line tool "devcon64" to reinstall the drivers. no success. Any idea if it is a hardware issue? Replacing keyboard in this ultrabook needs removal of boards, wireless card etc IINM. No Computer shop/online forums have any clue except requesting for reinstallation of OS. while, I doubt computer guy messed up wireless card.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Hi, I have been using a Dell Inspiron running windows 7 from the last 3 years. This is the second battery that I am on and got it changed in february,14 only. But from today morning suddenly its showing me " plugged in, not charging" message and the battery is not picking up charge. From the outside the battery looks fine to me with no bulges or anything. I tried un-installing microsoft battery related drivers as suggested by Google but that did not help. Any pointers?

Booked a HP 15-r014TX Notebook PC for INR 38,785 Config same as 15-r007TX (i4 4th Gen, 4GB RAM, i TB SATA, 15.6" screen), but comes with OS - 8.1 SL & I believe the processor has turbo boost.
Unfortunately there was no option for extended warranty.

Apologies .. typo error. It's i5 - 4th gen. Inquired with HP team yesterday for an extension in warranty apparently it cannot be done & I'll need to pay the full price (instead of the discounted amount) & can be purchase from HP.

Did you buy it online or from a HP store? How is the laptop doing.. build and performance?

Cooling pad for Laptop

Guys,

I have a 3 year old laptop (Dell N5110 - i7 - GT525M) doing well for the time.

Except for high idle/surfing_net temps (60 C) & cpu-gpu-intensive task temps (~90 C upto forced shutdown within 30 minutes or so.)
I tried putting a "table fan" pointing to base of laptop (from behind) with laptop already raised with a 1.5" wedge piece placed under the hinge side - resultant idle temp came down to 54 degrees C

This (cooling problem) had happened just before the warranty ended (last year).
I have gotten the heat sink replaced (and cleaned) then.
I have also kept the turbo boost disabled & I run the laptop processor at 90% max capacity (configured in the power options)

I saw the DIYs on the net for taking the laptop apart & cleaning the cooling circuit + changing thermal paste n such scary stuff.
But, I don't think I will be able to do that kinda surgery.. :(

So, until I gather the courage to do the needful,
Could anyone suggest be a decent cooling pad around 1.5K or so?

I am looking at these options:
Deepcool X4
OR
Deepcool X6

---

also, advice on "thermal paste" & a "beginner" tool kit to buy to work on home-electronics would be appreciated! (considering, I don't work much on electronics - & I don't intend to.. unless it becomes really necessary, like in this case)

Thanks,

Ace.

re: THE Laptop Thread: Configs, deals and questions

Guys,

I'm planning for a new laptop and hence considering Dell Latitude 15" with Windows 8.1 professional. Between the below 2 choices of hard disk, which is the better variant. Appreciate quick suggestion(s) on this.

a) 500GB (5400rpm) Hybrid HDD with 8GB Flash
b) 500GB (7.200 Rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive

Thanks in advance.

Can you use that 8GB flash partition as OS boot partition? If yes then you can go ahead with this one.

Is your problem solved?

If not here are a couple of steps to follow:
Right click on battery sign and select "Dell Battery Meter"
Select "Battery Life" from the dialog box that appears.
De-select "Disable Battery Charging", press OK and confirm OK again.

Hope this helps.
