What's wrong with that? The guy is on a tight budget otherwise I would have recommended IBMs TSM anyday (http://www-01.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/storage-mgr/).

It makes no sense to recommend something one can't buy!

And, You just called me a fool!

What's wrong is that a motherboard's integrated RAID chipset is usually not the stablest thing in the world. Going with thirdparty chipsets is pointless because you could easily build a proper NAS with a second offsite backup for a little more money, which will be infinitely more stable.

Seriously, nobody's asking you to recommend the most expensive piece of technology, but using a little bit of logic will go a long way in keeping your career and job on the right track, usually by not being fired for having a stupid backup plan.

Plus, understand people. A RAID will not save you from accidental deletions, or data corruption while writing, or a failed RAID chipset and a host of other things that can go wrong with a RAID. I don't buy the hard disks being stable argument. They are by no means reliable enough to run on a computer/server 24x7 for more than 2-3 years.

I really do not think this thread is helping Flyingspur in any way. What should be suggested in the specified budget? USB drives, RAID, NAS etc have already been eliminated by other members.

Guys, thanks a lot once again for your inputs. Met up with Pranav to try and get a clearer picture, and believe me my understanding of things is a lot better now. I'm in a much better position to speak with my technician, and hopefully we should come up with a solution within a week.

W-I-P. Temporary fix-it's, differing opinions, short-term v/s long-term etc etc. Will definitely update once concrete.
