That's a nice piece of information. Thank you. I used to have something called Mozy. After a few months of use, which was incidentally free, wherein it uploads data from my system, Mozy gradually reduced itself to an ornamental icon in the taskbar. Eventually I forgot all about it.

As you have pointed out, data that I value may have zilch value to anyone else. And therein lies the irony. Nobody understands the anxiety I felt when I seemingly lost it.

Hmm I too have a similar pen drive (hp 16 GB) and have the same issue with my Dell Laptop. But if I connect to my Compaq laptop it works absolutely fine. It even works with the newer Dell laptops and HP laptops.
I also get the same sound that OP is mentioning, but that seems to be the sound of the Hard-drive access.
