5800 firmware update is only available via NSU. It is not available OTA.

I have a Nokia 5800 got it on Dec 26. It does have Nokia maps. i tried using it today it works.

Question: I have google maps installed too. Which is better?

I called up nokia customer care and as per them, we cannot update the firmware from 30.xx to 40.xx through the website or OTA. One will have to visit the nokia care centre where they will update the same. As per the nokia cust care,in India, nokia has released the latest firmware only to the nokia care centres.

Why not change the product code and update?

How do you get the offline maps? By using the cache'd data?

Google maps can find the exact place you're looking for due to highly detailed maps!(but uses GPRS service to load maps via internet)

You can then mark these locations as 'favorites' and navigate to them via Nokia/Ovi) maps

I use both of them and they kinda need each other to be a effective gps capable of finding places and voice navigating to those places

that seems to be the case; since both OTA and the computer update utility tell me that I have the latest firmware (viz 30.x.x) for the 5800 while the India website clearly mentions v40!

it's also somewhat mystifying that some people are able to update their phones OTA or via the comp, and some are not.

of course "gratis" navigation with a 110mb map database is definitely worth a trip to the service centre and the interminable wait for one's turn.

feedback from anyone using the new maps would be really welcome!

Finally, I have my phone updated with the free nokia maps. For this, I had to visit the nokia care centre where they updated my firmware to version 40.x. free of charge ( as my phone was in warranty) .After this, I was able to download the latest ovi maps OTA and voila, I have the free navigation on my 5800. Now, need to test it out.

Does it cost anything to use? In the sense of some kind of fee to the service provider (vodafone, etc) or?

I am able to load Nokia Maps 3.0 successfully and it works fine in online mode. I am not sure whether Nokia currently supports offline mode and navigation support for E71. Please inform us if you are able to get a fully functional free version for E71.

Nothing.

The "service provider" is the USA's sattelites!

Unless you use AGPS, there is no cell network usage.

I tried on my N79 (not N97). The maps works but when tried to use the navigation, it prompts me to buy license. So, is it not 'free' for all phones?

That mostly means you don't have the latest ovi maps. Best way to make sure you have latest version is to download the maps from Nokia

When you download maps form here and try to install, you will either be prompted to update your firmware or else you will have the latest maps.
In the first case, you might have to visit a nokia care centre (incase you cannot download the latest firmware OTA)

Thats correct as i posted earlier. Nokia has only released maps with free nav for few phones. My n95 isnt supported as well. They will add more phones going ahead.

Any comment or feedback on the quality of maps? Can the maps be compared to MapMyIndia maps? Ovi maps online always gives 404 error. Read somewhere over the Internet that whole of city of Jerusalem with 800,000 inhabitants have just 3 (Three) streets mapped. Not that I am worried about how Jerusalem is mapped though..
