Using iPod touch for Skype calls - a query.

I need to make skype-skype calls from my iPod touch 2G.

The stock earphones do not have mic with them. I was looking at

eBay India: Headphone Jack Adapter / Adaptor + mic for iPhone (item 180465006505 end time 10-Feb-2010 19:31:01 IST)

Can this device be used together with the stock ipod earphones or Creative EP-630 earphones to provide the earphone-mic functionality for making Skype calls ?

Why not get the iphone 2g earphones? They come with the mic. If you don't find the original 2g earphones, you can after market that come with earphones. AFAIK u can't use your stock 2g earphones with the product listed.

Yes, that should work, so as any iPhone earphone with mic (2G or 3G doesn't matter)

Thanks for the reply guys..

But i am a little confused. The EP-630 earphones are 3.5 mm right ? But i have no problems using those with my iPod touch (which supposedly does not support 3.5 mm slot). Am i missing something?

Is there mic option in iPod touch.

If yes, what is it used for because unlike iPhone you cannot talk through iPod touch?

Are you using some special hardware ? Or is there some software option?

I am asking this since i posted the same question in Techenclave forum and got a reply:

Here is another solution

iPod/iPhone Dock Connector ordering
BTW Alter_Ego, what device are you using to make fring calls - iPhone earphone+mic or something else (like the convertor)

I use the iphone's headset(with mic). But i have also used the one provided with motorokr and it works fine too.
Itouch has the hardware inbuilt.Itouch has a host of features in all its devices. But apple never discloses it and later releases as an enhancement.

Just plug in any headset+mic combination which you usually use and it should work.

I have heard about fring.
Sahir can you guide me if a video call can be made using fring.Say skype to skype,or msn to msn.

If so then in my opinion the phone has to be a 3g so as to use the front camera.

Can you guide me please.

Non-Apple 3.5mm earphones do the job alright, but they can't control the Touch if they have a remote or something. It's got something to do with Apple using some sort of authentication chip in Apple's or Supported Brand's accessories.

You can use fring (www.fring.com) to make video calls as well. Of course you need front camera.
For connectivity either 3G or Wi-Fi will do.
I have used (and am using) fring on my Nokia E-71 extensively
Its pretty easy to setup.
Install fring, create a fring username and enter your skype/yahoo/gtalk details in the respective menu items and you are done !
