Avoid 64 bit XP. Its one of the worst 64 bit OS I have ever seen. It will not work properly. I have tried 64 bit XP on dual core intel and amd machines, all with atleast 4 gb of ram, but still it wont work in optimal manner.

when you computer is booting there will be a screen some options like press F2, Del, etc. Follow those instructions to enter into bios.
Here, but memory must be reported.

32-bit OS can only utilize upto 3GB RAM (XP/Vista/Win7), though thru Device Manager etc, it may correctly show as 4GB installed. However, 32-bit Windows Server Systems can utilize more.

I installed 64bit Windows 7 yesterday and it shows me 3.5gig usable out of 4gig.
This might be becos 512mb may be used up by the video card - check you bios setting. Do you have a dedicated separate video card or built-in-motherboard kind?
