Re: The Home Theater thread

Guys, need suggestions on setting up my new LG TV 55SM9000, LG SL8YG soundbar and Tata SKY using HDMI ARC setup.

Is HDMI ARC a better option or connecting via optical cable a better one.

The TV has a 4 HDMI inputs with HDMI ARC option (HDMI 2), the soundbar has a HDMI OUT (TV ARC) and HDMI IN along with Optical IN option.

What equipment should be connected to what and using which option.

Trying to setup using HDMI ARC, but little confused. Are 2 HDMI cables required to connect the above 3 to get the better option.. One HDMI from Tata Sky STB to TV (say HDMI 1) . Assuming this is for picture. Then another HDMI cable for connecting HDMI OUT ARC on Soundbar to HDMI ARC on TV (HDMI 2) . Is this a correct option OR anything is missed here. Or should I use a HDMI cable and an Optical cable for better sound connectivity.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, 2 hdmi cables are required. You can go like this.

1. Stb > TV > TV ARC > Soundbar HDMI in
Or
2. STB > Soundbar HDMI in > Soundbar HDMI Out > Tv

The advantage with option 1 is, you can play sound of any content playing on tv to soundbar. This includes dth, gaming or streaming services.

With HDMI ARC, you can control stb sound from TV remote only. With Optical this is not possible.

But sometimes there are compatibility issues between devices when using HDMI for sound.

Thanks for quick reply. Hope my below understanding is correct.

Option1 : Stb > TV > TV ARC > Soundbar HDMI in

Connect 1 HDMI cable from STB to a HDMI Input on TV (Assuming this is non HDMI ARC).

Connect another HDMI cable from HDMI ARC on TV to Soundbar HDMI IN(non HDMI ARC here as well).

In these two , a single HDMI cable is not being used to connect HDMI ARC on soundbar to HDMI ARC on TV.

Option 2 : STB > Soundbar HDMI in > Soundbar HDMI Out > Tv

Use one HDMI cable from STB to Soundbar HDMI IN.

Use 2nd HDMI cable from Soundbar HDMI ARC to HDMI ARC on TV.

This answer pertains to Optical Cable and an older TV without HDMI Arc.

In my bedroom, I have a Samsung with 4 HDMI inputs and an optical cable port.
HDMI 1 - Tata Sky STB
HDMI 2 - Laptop (TV Screen doubles as the laptop screen.)
HDMI 3 - PS4.

I have taken audio output from TV via the Optical port out and into the Soundbar "IN"
So whatever I view on the TV, sound is via the sound bar itself.
The soundbar & its remote have buttons to select Optical port option.
This has been the set up for past 5 years.
Hope this helps.

Go with this. This should work perfectly.

Re: The Home Theater thread

Guys, I will be setting up a Home Theatre system later this year - mostly towards May-June 2020. I am in a dilemma between going for a true Home Theater vs a SoundBar.

In the past, I have owned Denon Receivers twice and I would opt for a Denon Receiver again based on historical experience if I were to take the traditional route - possibly the Denon X2600H or the Denon X3600H by today's models.

However, I read some reviews of the Nakamichi Shockwafe Ultra 9.2.4 Ch 1000W Dolby Atmos Soundbar and it looks to be impressive. Does anyone have any idea if this is available in India anywhere (I am located in Bangalore)?

How would a Denon Receiver + Polk Audio Speakers compare with a Nakamichi type of sound bar? The setup would be used primarily for movie viewing and little bit of music. (80% Movie, YouTube and 20% Music).

Request the experts to weigh in...

Re: The Home Theater thread

Forget the soundbar irrespective of how good the algorithms make it sound.

A traditional avr with a basic 5.1/7.1 setup is the way to go. Not to mention the flexibility of upgrading and swapping out. You could eventually go the Atmos route if its something that floats your boat.

All AVR's in the range you are talking about will get the job done be it a Denon or an Onkyo or a Yamaha. x3600 has pre amp outs so you can add power amplifiers if you move to a more demanding speaker system.

Re: The Home Theater thread

Started Exploring Home Theatre Speaker options. Most shops that I visited so far seem to show a brochure with MRP and then do a 20 to 25% discount on the MRP as the selling price. Any insider information on what can be a good negotiation percentage beyond these numbers?

I checked Speakers from SVS, Q Acoustics, Polk Audio, Taga Harmony so far and the trend has been a 20% minimum to 25% discount which they seem to claim.

Website is not always up to date.

He also doesn't list Dali on his website for some reason. My guess is his retail agreement with Dali is no online sales.

His FB page has Dali mentioned though.

Very decent chap who has been in audio industry for a long time. I remember visiting 4-5 years ago.

You might get better prices in larger stores like DNI home theater etc but he is usually on par sometimes as well.

I have procured TAGA 606Se for 32.6 from AV Zone New delhi through India Mart( inclusive of shipping and CC MDR charges). It was shipped by Fed Ex with proper GST bill. The carton has proper India Importer sticker and number also.

Locally in Bangalore i was quoted 38K as minimum price for 606 SE.

Got Onkyo Tx NR 686 from USA for 273$

Thanks - this is helpful. Have noted down the Phone number for AV Zone - will get a quote from them as well once I finalize the speaker set.

Does it support 220V as in Universal Voltage?

Re: The Home Theater thread

Any Onkyo/Yamaha/Denon/Pioneer/Marantz bought from US will only run at 110-120V. Unless you specifically get a non US model, which makes no sense since it will be as costly as in India not to mention limited availability.

For multi voltage you looking at NAD/Arcam/Emotiva etc.
