In A/V receiver systems, what would be a good buy?

Anyone has experience with Onkyo TX-NR808?

Guys, need your opinion on this.

I have a sony 5ch speakers in excellent working condition(that used to be part of a 10+ years old mini hifi). Is it possible to hook up these speakers with a receiver and a woofer. What are the options available?

Is it a good idea to use these speakers or should i go in for a new HT system, in a great dilemma now. I have a budget of about Rs 20000 planned.

Pro FX sales guy tried to dupe me !!

I went to spencer plaza today and i just happened to see the shop 'pro fx' over there. As i was looking for a home theater system went in there and spoke to the sales guy.

We had a small discussion ( i told him my budget was 20k) and he said the starting budget was about Rs 60000 and they have an offer right now on a Denon receiver (AVR 1610) and Polk speakers (RM 6750) that comes to Rs 48k and odd from Rs 60000.

We went to demo room to see that systems and he played a movie scene. The sound effect was just mind blowing and sat them dumb stuck with the sound quality. Such a spectacular quality it was. My mind skipped the budget and was thinking on the financial aspects to get this one.

Asked to him to play a music cd this time, went to have a closer look at the speakers. Guess what, the RM 705 speakers was not connected at all and the while another set of higher configuration speakers have been playing. I asked the sales guy 'was it not connected' and he gave me an mind blowing answer.
He said, ' the speaker does not vibrate when it is playing and it is connected through a wire less kit'. Immediately, i saw the back of the speakers and it had two ports to connect wires, even if it was wireless, i believe it should have had a power point. There was no power supply or indicator of any sort.

I said thanks and walked out of the showroom, saying will get back to him.

I did not expect such a thing to happen from a very reputed showroom with branches throughout the country.

So anyone walking into pro fx, please exercise some caution.

ikoneer - That's strange, as a customer we have other options. I had been to their store in Bangalore and was not happy. They did not show me the products I was looking for and were trying to sell me some other stuffs!!

Finally I got it from Vectors

ikoneer, for 30k budget, why don't you audition amp+speaker setup. Read this thread. You will get some idea. I was also of the idea of a HTIB. Then dropped after listening to the sound quality of amp + speaker setup. You can get a norge amp (around 11k) + pair of wharfedale bookshelf. If i am buying a home theatre, i am pretty much sure i won't buy a HTIB.

Thanks for the inputs. The denon 390 is not a HTIB and hence i thought will consider this.

Any inputs to choose the specs and how do i match the speakers with the amp, in case i am selecting different brands.

A big hi to everyone here! Starting off from my earlier post about getting the Denon AVR1910 receiver from USA a couple of months ago, I am now a happy man to inform you'll that my AV setup is now complete. All the stuff has been ordered.
Well, I had to go off budget here too. But not by much. Just doubled it. :-(

Anyways here's the final setup:
Denon AVR1910 at the helm
Dali Ikon 6 floorstanders to do the singing in front
Dali Concept center channel to speak for the moviestars
Wharfedale Diamond 10.FS Bipolar Surrounds to do the backup vocals
HSU Research VTF 2 MK3 Subwoofer to do the floor shaking stuff
The Wires used are the Sommer NYFAZ Interior Cabling that does a stellar job at being hidden in walls but serves decent audiophile quality.

The subwoofer arrives on Tuesday, the floorstanders and center channel on Thursday.
The Amp and Surrounds are already here.

Starting the install in the next weekend as I shift to the larger residence in the weekend after that.

Cheers guys. Photos coming up soon.

Frankmehta - you started off with a 30K budget.

That list looks like 60K, with a zero missing :--D

Mind giving a breakup?

Didn't start off with 30 k.
Started off with 100k. :-(

If you consider MRPs I did cross the 200k mark, but I got the Denon receiver for cheap and the wires were gifted by a 'godfather' so I managed not to cross 200k. LOL.

Denon AVR1910 : Rs. 45000
Dali Ikon 6 floorstanders Vinyl black: Rs. 78000
Dali Concept center channel Vinyl black: Rs. 12600
Wharfedale Diamond 10.FS Bipolar Surrounds Vinyl black: Rs. 12700
HSU Research VTF 2 MK3 Subwoofer Rosenut Veneer: Rs. 72900
Sommer NYFAZ Interior Cabling: Rs. 170/ meter if I am not wrong.
