Hi!!
Nothing can go wrong with Denon and Polk TSI 300. In my opinion add the CS and surrounds later. Go in for a sub instead. With TSI 300 you will need a sub for the thump.

Stay away from Bose . Polk is a much superior product than Bose.
You can buy the Denon from grey at a mouth watering price.

Cheers!

You can get good used HT receivers (Denon/Onkyo/Yamaha/HarmonKardon) in Ritchie street, and they will let you check it once you decide to buy it.

But you may not be able to get the current models, usually the older models are only available.

Where is Patni plaza? The name seems familiar : is it somewhere in George Town area (or maybe Mint street?).

re: The Home Theater thread

I went to Ritchie Street and Burma Bazaar on Sunday and both were more or less closed. Heard that I will get only second hand there, which I am not interested in.

Patni, is at end of NSC Bose Road and I have purchased a lot of high end stuff there in the past... nevery checked out an AMP there though. Went there too yesterday and was closed as well...

I am a average joe listening to normal stuff at home with family, not a great audio freak but want to choose from one of the above. Budget does not matter.

Please advice pros and cons of Bose with Yamaha.

I have recently bought Denon 1612 receiver and Polk speakers. Fronts (TSI 100), center (CS10), rears (OWM3) and DSW Pro 600 subwoofer. I'm really happy with the combination.

IMHO go for denon 1612 instead of 1312. Also a good subwoofer is a must to complement your system. Avoid the PSW series of polk. Depending on your room size and acoustics choose one from the DSW series.

You can build your home theater in stages.

Thanks Ashish and Naj

Will have to ask one of my friends friend who is an expert in acoustics.

re: The Home Theater thread

Hey guys. I am looking for a decent home theater system for 25k.

I already have a Blu-Ray player and the main source will be the player and a TV.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Kaushik

re: The Home Theater thread

Hey guys,
I'am looking to replace my ageing home theatre system Philips 2500 Watts PMPO (Don't remember the exact mode number), with a higher wattage one. I'am basically looking at a budget replacement so the Onkyo's and BOSE's are out.
There are basically two models that fit my budget:

1) Sony 1000 watts RMS - INR 15,900 (Quality and Brand)
2) Philips 1000 watts RMS - INR 14,900 (Plays scratchedCD's too )

These are the most common modles available with discounts in most stores like Pai, Viveks, Chroma etc.

Now my question is are there any other modles available in the same price range that have a higher output/quality rating?

Or are the above two models good enough? If so should I pick the Sony or Philips?

I can stretch the budget a bit, just a little bit

Thanks in advance!

Latheesh,
I have been a fan of British Speakers/amps and rather have my handle as - Quadaholic , on The Global Audiophile - BUT you must lend an ear to Tannoy when you can.

Heard the basic Mercury V4 towers (INR 36k approx) last weekend for a casual audition, they were way more stark on imaging than our fav Wharfedale, Quad & Monitor Audio. While i found them edgy with mp3, with an SACD they were mighty pretty to the ears - very detailed.

Thought i shall just share an impression.

re: The Home Theater thread

Hi Trehansid

Not yet, Maybe this week. Just like cars we have too many options nowadays, difficult to choose. Of course I will choose either the Yamaha/Denon+Bose combo or Denon+PolkAudio combo.

I am waiting for a friends friend(who is a acoustics expert)'s final advice.

Also another of my friend is giving me lots of avenues to buy in the grey market - I am not too inclined but the prices are easily 10 to 15% cheaper.

Will keep this thread updated on my purchase and experience with the system.

Regards,

re: The Home Theater thread

Hi guys,

Urgent info required.

I am going to purchase the jbl entry level home theater package tomorrow. I think it is cinesystem 140.

Needed to clarify some doubts.

1. How should the connections be done for my tatasky hd and ps3 if i want to experience full 5.1 sarround?

2. Dealer (jbl entertainment lounge at kalkaji) is selling for 25 K, should i bargain on this price? What would be a fair price for this?

PS - i am not looking at future expansion for 3D etc., i just want good sound at a fair price.

Thanks,
Mustang.101

Tatasky HD can be connected via optical or coaxial. PS3 should be connected via HDMI.

Is this correct?

1. Tata sky

Hdmi from set top box to TV and coaxial from set top box to AVR

2. PS3

Hdmi from ps3 to tv and optical from ps3 to AVR.
